Who should MDs let die in a pandemic? Report offers answers

CHICAGO – Doctors know some patients needing lifesaving care won't get it in a flu pandemic or other disaster. The gut-wrenching dilemma will be deciding who to let die. Now, an influential group of physicians has drafted a grimly specific list of recommendations for which patients wouldn't be treated. They include the very elderly, seriously hurt trauma victims, severely burned patients and those with severe dementia.

The suggested list was compiled by a task force whose members come from prestigious universities, medical groups, the military and government agencies. They include the Department of Homeland Security, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Department of Health and Human Services.

The proposed guidelines are designed to be a blueprint for hospitals “so that everybody will be thinking in the same way” when pandemic flu or another widespread health care disaster hits, said Dr. Asha Devereaux. She is a critical care specialist in San Diego and lead writer of the task force report.

I don’t care where it originated. I care about an unchecked flow into this country by uncontrolled entrants from Mexico, period.

That’s a different issue. And since you don’t seem interested in discussing any of the solutions to it I proposed there’s really no reason to discuss it further.

The proposed guidelines are designed to be a blueprint for hospitals “so that everybody will be thinking in the same way”...

And why, praytell, is it so critical that everybody think in the same way?

The justification for this exercise is even creepier than it is!

That's fine. I don't recall or can immediately see where I originally responded to a comment you made. Your first reply to me was about something I posted to someone else.

I'm not trying to be rude here or denigrate what you say. I realize there are a lot of effective ways of dealing with disease orgination and outbreak. However, in the face of this latest potential disease influx from Mexico (BTW, do a google on diseases brought into the country by illegals from Mexico, etc. - there are some pretty nasty ones)the primary problem is uncontrolled borders and a 'look the other way' policy by this country's government. It is treasonous, if you ask me.

Sure, it's treasonous, but at the moment NO ONE still has the slightest idea where this particular flu started.

At the same time it's already jumped borders quite nicely and will soon be everywhere.

Stopping flu is a separate issue from stopping Mexicans. We should stop both, but they are not necessarily linked.

Sorry, but I will fight to my last breath before I’ll surrender our most vulnerable to the government’s gentle ministrations.

As will millions of Americans. It’s time we took OUR country back. A few hundred in DC have NO RIGHT, NONE, to make health care decisions for MILLIONS. Kick the dirty bas**rds out.

Okay, but with 1600 cases now in Mexico per Drudge with 100 or more dead, I’d say they (Mexico) are the biggest risk to this nation now. Having our border agents and customs people wear masks and listening for someone to say ‘I don’t feel well’ before they get involved by having them checked out is irresponsible. I believe Japan has the best approach right now.

Amazingly, the weak and the most vulnerable weren’t left on board to perish.

Uh huh. So why is it that more First Class men survived than Third Class children?

Ya, checking that 1/8th mile border at Tijauana should really help, but the 1000 other miles without a border probably won’t matter, especially with the massive influx of illegals coming in during May (the largest migration). We’re all gonna die. I’m already out buying a casket, one of those new green wicker jobbies ...

Do you own a gun? If so, one would think that your loved ones would get care if you have a gentle talk, with said gun in hand, with the docs.

And what happens when three or four gun owners show up, all demanding that the doctor take care of their loved one first? Do they shoot it out in the emergency room?

Lol, I'm glad I didn't see the sarcasm tag on the end of that.

Honestly, I had to go back and see what I had originally posted.

I always thought triage meant who gets treated first, not who gets treated and who doesn’t. If the plan is to not treat certain people at all, it isn’t triage.

The original version of triage, developed by Napoleon's army was to divide casualties into three groups (hence "triage"): One group was going to die no matter what you did. They weren't going to get any help. Another group was the slightly wounded. They could wait. The third group was the badly wounded who could be saved with immediate attention.

Not to mention all with disabilities and Down’s Syndrome babies, that’s who they really want to kill. Bureaucrats want to have the power of life or death over you. Control freaks, and pure evil, the hobgoblin of little minds.

Severely burned patients older than 60

So Ted Kennedy, Nancy Pelosi and Marie's 20 year old son are pulled out together. Kennedy is blackened and Pelosi is on fire, and Marie's son is just sort of tan, so who gets treated?

I remember being in school given a group exercise determining who out of a group of people should be choosen on a life-boat.

The entire idea is very Hitlerisque.
