The number of deaths linked to the swine flu outbreak in Mexico has risen to 81, the country's government has announced.

Will you folks relax?
Mexico has terrible nutrition and health standards - they are more susceptible to this than we are.
In the cases in the USA, a handful of people got sick. They are not at death’s door. If there is a breakout in the USA, a lot of us will be sick for a couple of weeks. Resources will be focused on the very young and the very old, those more susceptible to more serious complications.
Rugged individualism, indeed.
Just thinking that!
I’m in no hurry to go to Colorado, but it sure beats Vegas!
I love that bit, as if “throwing away a few aluminum cans and paper bags would kill the planet”.
It may be a nutritional difference. We have access to more and better food. Vitamin, mineral and other supplements as well. Much of our food is supplemented with vitamin D...especially milk. Vitamin D3 may have some protective capability.
Shut down border crossings.
Won’t help. People fly in airplanes. Besides cases have already been reported in California, Kansas, Texas and New York. Genie is out of the bottle.
That's not the group that is dying. It is the healthy 25 to 45 year-olds that are dying. Perhaps a cytokine storm from a healthy immune system. A 1918 redux.
Captain Tripps ping. Read this.
OMG that movie crossed my mind too!
I've been to Mexico City on business a few times. I would say your statement doesn't necessarily apply to the majority of residents in the capital area.
Those are the ones dying in Mexico, where nutrition and medical standards are poor.
It ain’t 1918, it’s 2009. We are better off than we were in 1918 in almost every way thanks to better nutriton and better health standards.
I suspect if it is terribly bad, our friends in Mexico would get hit very bad. I suspect that we wouldn’t.
A little dignity, folks.
The outbreak of Spanish Influenza in 1918 killed people between the ages of 25 to 45 more than other age groups. This strain is similar. If you are in that range with a strong immune system, the virus triggers your immune system into overdrive and attacks your lungs and other internal organs. The infants and elderly fared better than the people in the prime of their lives.
I have a feeling everything will be fine - some folks may get sick, but it won’t be terribly bad, north of the border, that is.
Haven’t recited that prayer for quite a while. It is comforting.
My Grandmother (who just turned 90 today!) had a great remedy for any respiratory illness so I am passing on to you.
1 can frozen lemonade concentrate (mix with 2/3 water recommended on can so it is stronger than normal)
heat on the stove in a saucepan
add honey to taste
Of course it was always special when my grandma made it for me:-) I do swear though that every time I am sick I make a pot or two and it REALLY helps. Hope you feel better.
I hope you’re correct. I had a bad case of the flu a month ago. It was three weeks before I felt like myself again. I haven’t been that sick in 20 years, no exaggeration.
Hopefully, I’m now immune! (Geez, I hope I don’t have to eat those words). :(
Anything that reduces the number of infected people entering the country helps.
Good luck and I am sure you will be fine.
you guys are creeping me out! The Stand was the first King book I read, scared the heck out of me and I have loved the story every since but it gets kinda creepy when you start hearing the stuff in the news. What was the flu called??? It’s on the tip of my tongue.
Thanks much. I’ll get it.
