I only have a second, so I may come back and respond to this post again to address other issues...
However, I am reminded of the 1913 Flu in that it only affected the 23-46 age set as well (those ages may be slightly off). That flu epidemic went through and killed mothers and fathers, and children were orphaned. Same with older individuals who were in relatively good health. That’s part of the reason this flu is rather scary... In the short articles I’ve read some of they symptoms seem so similar — especially the age group of the fatalities...
