Orlando mom forgives pharmacist who shot her son

Her son lay dead in his casket. Marija Vukomanovic held fast to her faith.

The pastor told mourners about Lazarus, who rose from the dead.

The mother knelt and reached for her boy.

"I believed in the miracle, so I touched his heart," Vukomanovic said.

Nothing happened. Mario Vukomanovic, 23, war refugee, star student and drug addict, was gone, shot dead as he tried to rob a south Orange County pharmacy April 1 at gunpoint. Orange County deputies said the shooting was self-defense.

"But now I have another miracle," the mother said in an interview this week. She forgave the pharmacist who shot her son.

I like a good successful self-defense story as much as the next guy but I’m not going to crow or grunt at an old woman whose criminal son is dead and chooses to forgive and embrace the man who killed him.

It still amazes and embarrasses me how hateful some conservatives can be. Some on FR seem devoid of all empathy. They just cannot or will not put themselves in the mother's shoes.

Sounds reasonable to me. The mother seems like a woman who did her best, for her son, and isn't willing to let that or her own grief fill her heart with hate or rage.

It is a rare woman to be possessed of that kind of wisdom and forgiveness.
