WASHINGTON, April 24 (Reuters) - The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said on Friday it was too late to contain the swine flu outbreak in the United States.
CDC acting director Dr. Richard Besser told reporters in a telephone briefing it was likely too late to try to contain the outbreak, by vaccinating, treating or isolating people.
"There are things that we see that suggest that containment is not very likely," he said.
He said the U.S. cases and Mexican cases are likely the same virus. "So far the genetic elements that we have looked at are the same." But Besser said it was unclear why the virus was causing so many deaths in deaths in Mexico and such mild disease in the United States.

Anne Schuchat, the CDC’s interim deputy director for science and public health, said more cases are expected.
“We’re trying to take action early before it gets worse,” Schuchat told reporters in a telephone conference call Saturday from the CDC’s Atlanta headquarters. She said all of the U.S. cases so far have been mild and only one person have been hospitalized.
“It’s time to prepare and to think ahead, and time to be ready for some uncertainty, and to know that the public health and clinical communities are working together on this across countries’ lines.”

But we all know that Viruses are peaceful. It is only a small part of the viral world that has perverted virusdom. The worst possible result of this is if people started discriminating against viruses and killing viruses indiscriminately.

retro. Mexico City has 25-30 million people. All public events have been cancelled. The gvt there is admitting to 60 deaths out of 1000 cases. There are not several confirmed cases in the US. They are geographically isolated. So it means it is passing from person to person and these are the tips of the iceberg.
Even if our death rate is 1/6th of Mexico’s here in the states, it’s a big honkin’ deal.
It is out of the bag, at least in the Americas. Japan and China are being sensible and doing health checks of anyone arriving from Mexico, and probably soon, the US and Canada.
I thought hard about selling my whole portfolio yesterday. Should have followed my gut. Gonna lose a lot of money on Monday, even in pre-trading, it’s probably best just to wait it out instead of selling into a panic. At least I have tamiflu for the family and the ability not to leave my house for a month, if it comes to that.

FWIW, olive leaf extract works quite well on the flu. Not sure if it would help in a pandemic situation, but it does help with all kinds of viruses
My dad has congestive heart failure. He lives in Dallas. I’m concerned about him catching this illness.
If he does get sick, I won’t be able to visit him because I have 2 daughters that are also high risk for flu complications (seizure disorder for one and asthma for the other).
It’s scary.

On a lighter note, we paid the CDC to destroy the Florida tomato harvest last year when the Salmonella culprit was a Mexican jalapeno pepper.
The CDC is as useless as the United Nations.
It was better than the review. I couldn’t put it down.....however, I think that was more of my pure desire to make sure that the bad guys were caught.

It would be a very costly to try quarantines, and vaccines cannot be made and distributed in time. Those who had the flu, have been in contact with many people. There is not a reasonable way to implement quarantines. They are merely speaking realistically.
That doesn’t mean that they aren’t doing anything. Communication with ER staff, and airport officials, and increased distribution and production of tamiflu are probably going to be very helpful. CDC is a government agency, but even so, they do a good job. They have spent a lot of time gearing up for the bird flu, and they have developed good protocols to handle a flu epidemic (if it comes to that) The swine flu isn’t what they were expecting, but they are very equipped to handle it.

A member of the cabin crew from a British Airways Mexico City-to-Heathrow flight is in hospital with “flu-like symptoms” after falling ill in mid-trip.
The man, who has not been named, has been taken to Northwick Park Hospital in Harrow, north London.
A hospital spokesman said: “He has flu-like symptoms and is responding well to treatment.”
