CDC says too late to contain U.S. flu outbreak

WASHINGTON, April 24 (Reuters) - The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said on Friday it was too late to contain the swine flu outbreak in the United States.

CDC acting director Dr. Richard Besser told reporters in a telephone briefing it was likely too late to try to contain the outbreak, by vaccinating, treating or isolating people.

"There are things that we see that suggest that containment is not very likely," he said.

He said the U.S. cases and Mexican cases are likely the same virus. "So far the genetic elements that we have looked at are the same." But Besser said it was unclear why the virus was causing so many deaths in deaths in Mexico and such mild disease in the United States.

First, I didn’t recommend it.

Second, the review was ridiculous. It doesn’t seem to me that the person who wrote it read the book.

Especially the last line, I have no recollection of that. Although, parts were horrible, I might have skipped a few lines. Scores of sex scenes?????? The only sex scenes I remember were the two or three describing the evilness. I wouldn’t even classify them as sex scenes, more like violence.

Reading that review, It sounds like the next big Hollyweird hit. It wasn’t a right wing bashing either.....compared to many new novels.

Sorry I brought it up. I told the librarian to take it off the employee recommended shelf. Her embarassed reply was...”We just put random books up there”

An earlier article that I read said that most of the people, including those in Mexico, had no contact with swine and that the transmission was from human to human.

I am assuming that this is an airborne virus. I don’t know if the people in the US had had any contact with the Mexican victims; it actually sounded as if the US victims had gotten it first, since most of them had already recovered by the time it was detected in Mexico. This may mean simply that it wasn’t identified right off the bat in Mexico (it strikes young people and doesn’t seem like a typical flu), or it could be that it started in two separate places, or that somebody from the US brought it to Mexico - or vice versa and it just wasn’t detected in the US until there were enough cases to make a connection.

It seems a little odd, both with respect to its composition (swine/avian/human?) and its spread.

Biological terrorism by Al Qaeda?

And wouldn't it be poetic justice coming from those who see us as infidel pigs?

Al Qaeda reportedly comes in through Mexico very frequently. So it would seem logical for the virus to be first recognized there, no?

I heard a local report that it had genes from human, bird, and swine flu. How does such a thing occur? Is this Bio terror?

I am mistaken,,the new virus is sensitive to tamiflu.

Well by all means, send in the counselors to comfort and reassure that virus that the bully drug Tamiflu is nothing to be afraid of, to just keep it's lunch money and go ahead and infect people.

Isn't that the politically correct thing to do?

“’ve read that CDC has Tamiflu at the ready, to try and contain the outbreak, which conflicts with the “too late to contain” remarks. I wonder if the right hand knows what the left hand is doing.”

Containment means keeping the flu from spreading into the US population. Probably, the people who have been diagnosed, were in contact with too many people to identify and quarantine. Also, it is probably transmitted easily from person to person, based upon the people who have contracted it.

Tamiflu does not contain, it just mitigates the illness. If taken early enough, it can make the illness milder. It does not prevent the illness, and it does not keep it from spreading.

And since this is a virus, it has to run its course, right? Can people survive it?

7 People diagnosed with swine flue in Texas does not make an epidemic.

Especially when they probably just snuck in yesterday.

Not to mention shaping our hamburger patties and stuffing our tacos.

Oh gee, that's right. And then there are those who are just mean and spit in our food before it's served.

Dr. Peter Venkman: This [country] is headed for a disaster of biblical proportions.
Mayor: What do you mean, “biblical”?
Dr. Raymond Stantz: What he means is Old Testament, Mr. Mayor, real wrath-of-God type stuff. Fire and brimstone coming down from the sky! Rivers and seas boiling!
Dr. Egon Spengler: Forty years of darkness! Earthquakes, volcanoes...
Winston Zeddmore: The dead rising from the grave!
Dr. Peter Venkman: Human sacrifice. Dogs and cats living together. Mass hysteria!

It has been mild here in the US. In Mexico it has been more severe. It isn’t clear where the virus began, but from reading the articles, it seems to have originated in the US, and then traveled to Mexico. That could mean that the virus is becoming more virulent as it evolves. If it originated in Mexico and then came to the US, it is less virulent as it evolves. The CDC doesn’t seem to know why it is more virulent in Mexico. CDC seems to be taking this seriously and they are obviously tracking this. It is something to keep an eye on.

Isn’t this another of Obama’s final solutions?
One third of us need to be exterminated. Why
not by a “convenient” plague that no one would
question?

My two cent tinfoil hat opinion.

I don’t believe for a moment that it’s too late
to “contain” it.

Hmmm... maybe it's planned.

Use it as justification for Health Care reform...if we'd had universal health, blah, blah, blah.....

That’s certainly not encouraging. I guess it probably wouldn’t take much to get something like this started - one infected person on an airline flight with other people who scattered to different parts of the US or Mexico, and there you go.
