Obama open to torture memo prosecutions
The Washington Times ^ | Wednesday, April 22, 2009 | Stephen Dinan

President Obama for the first time Tuesday opened the door to prosecuting former Bush administration officials, saying those who approved harsh interrogation techniques for suspected terrorists may be subject to criminal charges.

The president also left open the possibility for an independent commission to examine the interrogations of detainees with techniques that included waterboarding, sleep deprivation and other tactics that defenders said produced valuable information.

The remarks were a reversal from several days ago, when Mr. Obama said he wanted to move forward and his chief of staff appeared to rule out any prosecutions. The president took a harder line after a key congressional committee chairman and liberal pressure groups urged him not to take prosecutions off the table.

Why water board torture Muslim terrorists, when you can legal torture Republicans?

” Wonder what the U.S. Intelligence community is going to do in response...”

Are you kidding? Except for a few field agents, the CIA is just as liberal as any other departmetn in the government.

” Even Hillary wouldn?t have done this. “

Hillary loves this country. We may not agree with her on many things, but at least she (a) had experience, and (b) loves this country.

I wonder how many of us, knowing what we know now (that McCain wasn’t going to win), would have voted for Hillary instead of McCain - to make sure we didn’t end up with Zero. I would have.

The target is really the Bush administration. As high as they can go, they will. I think they hope for Cheney and a trial with him would be a real “teaching moment” for Obama. I bet it blows up on Obama big time.

I would hope they are making hundreds of copies of it now. Its time to impeach.

I have feeling, if he’s impeached at all, its going to be over hyperinflation. And Congress will be left with no other choice, as its either they’re at risk of being voted out in 2010, or they’re replaced in 2010.

That's funny right there. I don't care who you are.

I and a lot of others were of the opinion that we should have gone after Clinton’s minions for their multiple abuses of power.

I don’t know about the rest of them, but I was talked out of it because once we start down that road, every outgoing administration is going to fear retribution from the winning team — and at some point it the future it will become a virtual certainty that a losing team, fearing the worst should the winners actually take office, will decide not to go.

That would be the end of the American Republic.

It now looks like that is going to happen anyhow.

Exactly. This is a terrible idea, and not on partisan grounds.

The Obama administration may not have to worry if they are into Idi Amin style elections. You know, one man, one vote, one time.

It won’t blow up on Obama. Obama will get what ever he wants as long as the MSM is in his back pocket.

I really hope this man pays dearly (as in taxes) and forced into severe poverty by his savior. Maybe when this stuff hits his back pocket, he will figure out what an idiot he has been. Stupid is as stupid does. Forest Gump was smarter than this pile of rat droppings.

IMO, a trial would certainly be a high stakes gamble for the defendant but there would have to be some definition of terrorism and I don’t think that waterboarding would meet that test. Then testimony could be introduced about the aborted LA attack and others.

Nothing personal, but wrong. The spooks I have met, in general, are incredibly patriotic. It's a requirement, actually (or at least it used to be). They are very professional, quiet, calm, and don't talk about it. That is also a requirement. Good people.

Obama is more concerned about trying to discredit the Bush administration than he is concerned about finding out the terrorists’ plans to strike us again - this month, this year, next year.......

Under Bush, we had no further attacks after 9/11/01. Under Obama, the jury is out, but he appears to be aiding the terrorists by releasing them from Gitmo, announcing that we will take all troops out of Iraq, appeasing Iran, North Korea, Cuba, and Venezuela, revealing past CIA techniques, undermining the current CIA, and calling our veterans terrorist suspects.
