Interesting article. I think we in the US are headed towards a similar situation - government by a “Big Man,” collapsing infrastructure (watch for the Feds to start rationing electricity on “environmental” grounds), and an economic system that can only be described as a kleptocracy (state -controlled, as are all good kleptocracies).
Hitchens is absolutely right about the tolerance of Mandela’s political defects as having led directly to this situation in SA. The tolerance of the political excesses of the soft left always results in the consolidation and sudden emergence of the hard left.
Unfortunately, America (et al) has helped kill the goose that laid the golden egg in Dark Africa. Our socialist politicians can rejoice in what their actions have created in a once great nation.
Ah - another friend for Obama!
I had the occasion to work in Peru, during the radical days of the ‘80s....a favorite practice of government was to turn the power off to certain locations, in order to create anxiety.....
WHY do black people put up and vote for these thugs??????
I bet a lot of South Africans are starting to think the apartheid regime wasn’t so bad, in retrospect.
Imagine if a communist traitor mole was elected as POTUS.
That happened too.
Looks like a relative to “Baby Doc” Duvalier or maybe one of his Tonton Macoutes.
Zuma is the leader picked by the far-left hard communist youth in the ANC, who became frustrated with Mandela and Mbeki for not going the way Mugabe did. Zuma will not disappoint them.
For the first time there is a viable alternative though, hopefully COPE can stop them getting a parliamentary majority and stop them from passing a law that will prevent the prosecution of sitting presidents. It’s a big if though, there are no guarantees that the election will be fair.
I think this all-embracing "greenhouse gas" nonsense will give the government the legal power it wants to announce that electricity to certain places will be restricted at certain times. As you point out, this is a psychological technique. In addition, raising people's discomfort level (for example, the fact that AC or heating would also be affected by the restriction of electrical power) makes them focus on their own unhappiness and distracts them.
I have a theory.
If you look at the clothes and other fashions of the teen crowd, there is little in the way of "utility" to explain it. The purpose of teen fashion is to bother adults. If adults are not ticked-off by youth fashion (or even worse, adopt it for themselves), youth fahion will degrade to the point that adults are bothered by it.
I think minority voting patterns are similar. Blacks vote for people that whites can't stand. That is the number one requirement.
The World Cup is in S. Africa next year. There will be visitors from around the world. I will be curious to see the crime statistics during the World Cup.
That’s an interesting theory, although one can expand that by saying that blacks are emulating adolescent behavior and should therefore be handled as....adolescents?
Does this mean that the “benevolent white man” will have to once again take stewardship over “wayward blacks” in order to manage them into an existence of sorts that is relatively free of tribalism? Answers on a postcard, anyone?
It is not a theory that one should propose in polite company. One might be thought to be insensitive....
The fact that many white entrepreneurs have been driven out of S.Africa, the fact that what was once the most anti-radical communist socialist is now just another dictatorship with anti-capitalist leaders, is very troubling for the stability of the southern half of Africa. Years ago Castro finagled in Angola and Mozambique, now with this Zuma in charge, you can be sure more dictators will be seen in the halls of govt. there.

The ugly thuggery is quite apparent in the above broadcast.
Toward the end, the reporter says something along the lines of "there are protests in South Africa every day...for more money, better houses".
I look at this and I don't see a whole lot of difference with the 0bama rallies with the exception that in S.A. there is a bit more honesty in terms of expressing their Leftist goals and you don't have the young white women fainting at the sight of Zuma. And as is stated in the broadcast, the Zuma supporters simply don't care about all of the corruption, the rape, the thuggery....just like the 0bama supporters, it absolutely does not matter one whit.
Just like so many 0bama supporters, the Zuma fans think that their Dear Leader will provide everything for them, like manna from Heaven.
These guys are smart. They convince the ignorant masses that their dreams are just over the next hill, held by evil people who took them. Hitler used the Jews for that. The people will support anything that gets them something for nothing.
When German POW’s were brought to the US, German prisoners were astonished that the Americans could so easily hide the massive devastation of German bombing in New York and Norfolk. Many believed they were being offloaded at movie studios.
