Social conservatives tolerated John McCain as the party’s nominee, but never trusted him, and he now appears to be facing a serious primary from the right in Arizona next year.
Chris Simcox, the founder of the Minuteman Civil Defense Corps and a prominent figure in the anti-immigration movement, is announcing today he’s resigned from the group to run in the 2010 Senate primary.
Toomey in Pennsylvania and Simcox on Arizona. Strong candidates to unseat liberal repukes. Even if they win the primary and lose the general, who would notice any difference?
McCain needs to go back to AZ and cry in his wife’s beer!
In 2006 Pederson (D)was only able to attract 43.5 to Kyl’s 53.3% (a libertarian candidate received 3.2%), so it’s likely a quite conservative Republican could win the general if he or she defeated McCain in the primary. OTOH if such a candidate was a one trick pony - and the trick was immigration - that might not be so good; the issue might have been rendered largely moot by “immigration reform”, or other issues might be of much greater importance.
It’s lonk past time to make RINOs like McCain extinct.
