The girlfriend needs to be prosecuted as an accessory to the assault on the police officer. She made a straw purchase (with or without filling out a form 4473) and conveyed to firearm to a convicted felon. Profile of straw buyers is mostly women with drug abuse problems, but have not been arrested for it (thus no criminal record yet). Felony finds out she has no criminal record, becomes her boy friend, gives her drugs, then uses the relationship and drug angle to convince her to buy a gun for him in return for relationship, money and/or drugs. The Columbine teens got a gun thru a girl who needed money for drugs and still had a clean reocrd. She got off lightly because she convinced the anti gunners she would become a spokeperson against guns.

That's an automatic felony in itself in my state, even if it was your own gun you gave to a felon family member.
