In a free market, the the price of real estate would adjust according to the change in demand.

In this bizarro manipulated economy, somehow it is the responsibility of the taxpayer to shore up the profits of people who bought real estate at artificially inflated prices.

Almost half of the properties in trouble are not derelict buildings, but rather well-performing properties that are worth less than what their current owners paid for them.

Good point, but the Consumer Bubble has burst and I feel that darker times are ahead for even these "well-performing properties". Far-ranging job layoffs and a hunker-down mentality by the survivors do not bode well for consumer-oriented stores, whether in malls or stand-alone.

My best Gal Pals and I drove to Milwaukee (WI) today for a day of ‘Retail Therapy.’ While the mall was much, much busier than I had anticipated for a MONDAY, there were many vacancies in the mall, and we noticed quite a few stores that had closed their doors since we were there in November, 2008.

But, lots of deals to be found, that was for sure. The other three gals bought 2-4 pair of shoes EACH, and clothing and odds and ends lotions and potions, and I stocked up on basics for work (t-shirts and jeans) that were name-brand and very reasonably priced thanks to in-store sales and a few coupons that I had printed out from their websites.

On the other hand, I DID notice that some of the stores had totally re-vamped themselves; all new fixtures, a new ‘style’ to the store, etc. It couldn’t have been cheap, and in my opinion, this might not be the time to re-package yourself, but they did it.

And...Milwaukee, WI has one of the HIGHEST unemployment rates in our state; upwards of 11%.

I can’t make sense of what I see with my own eyes, what the market is doing, and what the dopes in Washington and the Media are telling us. *Scratches Head*
