The tween girls of the Washington area have transcended differences of race, class and wealth to reach a single, resounding conclusion: They really, really, really, really want to be friends with Malia and Sasha Obama.
They lap up every shred of information about the first daughters, dream about meeting them and strategize ways to make it happen. Minivan rides and dinner table conversations are dominated by questions about the girls: What's their favorite food? What kind of dog did they get? Where can I get a coat like Malia's?
"Sometimes I go up to my room and I just think, 'I want to meet them, I want to meet them, I want to meet them,' " says a desperate Sophie Metee, a fourth-grader at Wood Acres Elementary in Bethesda.
Her mom, Kathy Lindert, just sighs: "Oh, Sophie."
Lindert has entertained hours of speculation on everything "Obama girls" -- what their bedrooms look like, if they like Ledo Pizza and whether they put whoopee cushions on the seats of visiting dignitaries. And this week there was the arrival of the Obamas' Portuguese water dog, Bo.
"All day long we've been looking at pictures of the dog," Lindert said Wednesday, the day after Bo was introduced to the world at the White House.
In poster-strewn bedrooms around the Beltway, other daughters have been doing the same thing. It struck Lindert as strange at first, but she knows her daughter's fixation isn't much different from that of adults across the region who earnestly hope that Barack and Michelle Obama will somehow land at their church or neighborhood dinner party.
Maya Catoe, a sixth-grader from Temple Hills, imagines a friendship blooming through the Girl Scouts.

“touched with the glittering sheen that envelops their entire family, and yet, as Sophie Metee says, they still seem “like normal kids.”
Please give us a break. The girls are cute as most kids are; but they grow up.
More pathetic adulation by brainwashed twerps.
Manipulated by the media, raised by passive or uncaring parents, unable to think for themselves...what a waste.
I don’t believe a word of this claptrap.
The kids are off limit.
Geez. These people need a life.
Sasha and Malia the next Baby names for all the Self Loathing White Scum.
I'm not going to say anything about them. But there is kind of a double rule about that. Obama can constantly use them for self-advertising. And we are allowed to admire them. But we aren't allowed to criticize them.
O.K. I don't really want to criticize a couple of kids. But this does kind of remind me of the clintons and Chelsea. Just as Bo reminds me of the clintons and Buddy, who got conveniently run over just as soon as they didn't need him any more as a political symbol. Or Socks, whom they got rid of as soon as they had no need for a symbolic cat.
Why? Bushes kids weren't.
They should be exposed for the spoiled brats they are, for ignoring the dog they just got when the novelty wears off.
Selecting a high maintenance hyper dog that requires a lot of attention, exercise and grooming just shows that the Obama's are incapable of making wise decisions.
Just wait till it snaps at one of the Obama girls friends faces and takes a nose off... That's going to cost the taxpayers a fortune for Obama stupidity.
bullsh!t
Exactly. What kid thinks that? This is obviously the writer's shoddy attempt at trying to imagine what a kid would think about. Normal kids would imagine what kind of toys these spoiled brats have, like video games, TV's or what ever normal little girls are into these days. They wouldn't imagine sitting down with stuffy old dignitaries from foreign countries and talking politics.
I did notice that the older one seems to be getting more "white". I wonder if she's on the same pills Micheal Jackson and Opi takes?
The poor little girls, they are in trouble, big trouble, because ANYTHING that takes away form the ego of the empty suit in nothing but trouble.
In his eyes he is the beginning, the middle and the end, nothing else matters - NOTHING.
