An American journalist jailed in Iran has been convicted of spying and sentenced to eight years in prison, her lawyer said Saturday, dashing any hopes for her quick release.

The verdict was the first time Iran has found an American journalist guilty of spying, and it was unclear how the conviction would affect recent overtures by the Obama administration for better relations and engagement with Washington's longtime adversary.

Roxana Saberi, a 31-year-old dual American-Iranian citizen, was arrested in late January and initially accused of working without press credentials. But earlier this month, an Iranian judge leveled a far more serious allegation, charging her with spying for the United States.

Any time the Iranians negotiate, they take hostages first.

Roxana Saberi, Former Miss North Dakota, Journalist...

...was arrested in late January and initially accused of working without press credentials. But earlier this month, an Iranian judge leveled a far more serious allegation, charging her with spying for the United States.

She appeared before an Iranian court behind closed doors on Monday in an unusually swift one-day trial.

Saberi has been sentenced to eight years in jail.

The United States has called the charges against Saberi baseless and has demanded her release, and the conviction and prison sentence could put strains on efforts to improve ties.

President Barack Obama has said it wants to engage Iran in talks on its nuclear program and other issues

"...it was unclear how the conviction would affect recent overtures by the Obama administration for better relations and engagement with Washington's longtime adversary..."

Okay.

I would like to see a show of hands out there who is "unclear" on how the incarceration and trampling of the rights of a single American citizen by THE chief exporter of terrorism in the world is going to affect the Obama administration's overtures.

Conservatives, keep your hands down. I know you already know the answer.

"...has demanded her release..."

Those Iranians sure are walking on thin ice. A nasty letter is probably next. They better be careful.

The mullahs see clearly that this woman is now a big bargaining chip to put on the table for Obama and Hillary to stew over.

Yep. Obama will give in to whatever Iran demands because either he's seen as the MSM’s Messiah or he loses some of his MSM ass kissers.

Poor woman. Eight years in prison in Iran could be a life sentence for her. I can’t imagine it.

Aw, that’s a shame... and shocking! /s

How long will it take the scumbag propogandists in the media to spin the story as a positive for the Obamanation? Hey, here’s a way for you moronic lemmings in the press to spin the story... How about, “the administration worked diligently with the Iranians to ensure the “spy” would still be in her 30’s when she was released from jail.” Yeah, that’s the ticket.

She won't serve 8 years. She's a bargaining chip and Obama will give in to whatever Iran wants probably within a couple months. It's been learned that Israel is prepared to take their nukes out and Iran probably wants Obama to stop them as payment.

She is an attractive woman, as are many Persian women (I don’t know if she is or not). Wearing lipstick over there like that can get a woman in trouble, if someone takes exception to it.

sorry. I don’t feel for her. Of all people, an Iranian citizen should know better than to even be over there and trust the govt (not to mention as a journalist). How do we know she is not working for them JUST to create this “situation”?
