Veterans a Focus of FBI Extremist Probe Article Comments

WASHINGTON -- The Federal Bureau of Investigation earlier this year launched a nationwide operation targeting white supremacists and "militia/sovereign-citizen extremist groups," including a focus on veterans from Iraq and Afghanistan, according to memos sent from bureau headquarters to field offices.

The initiative, dubbed Operation Vigilant Eagle, was outlined in February, two months before a memo giving a similar warning was issued on April 7 by the Department of Homeland Security.

Disclosure of the DHS memo this week has sparked controversy among some conservatives and veterans groups. Appearing on television talk shows Thursday, Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano defended the assessment, but apologized to veterans who saw it as an accusation.

"This is an assessment of things just to be wary of, not to infringe on constitutional rights, certainly not to malign our veterans," she said on NBC's Today Show.

The documents outlining Operation Vigilant Eagle cite a surge in activity by such groups. The memos say the FBI's focus on veterans began as far back as December, during the final weeks of the Bush administration, when the bureau's domestic counterterrorism division formed a special joint working group with the Defense Department.

Associated Press Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano, pictured this month in Mexico, defended the assessment Thursday but apologized to veterans. A Feb. 23 draft memo from FBI domestic counterterrorism leaders, obtained by The Wall Street Journal, cited an "increase in recruitment, threatening communications and weapons procurement by white supremacy extremist and militia/sovereign-citizen extremist groups."

The FBI said in the memo that its conclusion about a surge in such activities was based on confidential sources, undercover operations, reporting from other law-enforcement agencies and publicly available information. The memo said the main goal of the multipronged operation was to get a better handle on "the scope of this emerging threat."

Lord Zero needs to feel some heat over this.

If he gets credit for the actions of 3 Navy Seals halfway around the world, He can damn sure take some blame for the actions of a woman he appointed and works in his white house.

For 8 years we’ve known the left was going to try to demonize our troops. The protests and name calling, the destruction of memorials were all repeats of the nasty 60’s and 70’s. We knew the leftists were calling our troops murders and baby killers. We must stand with our troops now lest there is a repeat of the horrible welcome home our Vietnam Veterans received.

This development breaks my heart. It does not surprise me, though.

Thank you to all the Operation Infinite Freep folks who have countered the peaceniks every week for years. I pray it makes a difference.

Wake up people! Our heroes are under attack and it’s not from overseas this time.

"militia/sovereign-citizen extremist groups,"

Did I miss where they defined what they thought were "extremist" groups? Heck, to them, an "Extremist" group could be anything to the right of Jimmy Carter.

J. Edgar Hoover and his “friend” must be smiling today - wherever they are.

Let the left a@@hats make real enemies of our service men. They forgot that combine the military men and all the vets, they have real reason to duck.

Veterans should start an investigation of the FBI. See if its members are meeting with communists and fascists for information used against veterans. Follow the FBI, see which restaurants they eat at, which bars they get drunk at. Analyze the FBI’s public pronouncements to see if the FBI is using statements and vernacular common to communists and Marxists. An accounting should also be done of specific high level agents to see if they’re living far beyond their salary. If so, demand an explanation and turn the info over to a local prosecutor.

you don't know JEH. His credentials as patriot and defender of the Constitution can not be questioned.

The FBI does not initiate these investigations. Either the DOJ, or under special circumstances the WH.

The FBI is probably the most conservative of all governmental agencies. The career employees in other bureaucracies are heavily democrat.

We already know the FBI was infiltrated (apparently successfully) by Farleftwingtards in the anthrax investigation.

So why not other elements?

I don't think they can be trusted.

The FBI, like other investigative bodies in the federal government, is split half Dem half Rep.

Not a big issue ~ most of them are there just to fire guns and act pompous. Oh, yeah, if you are real lucky you get to drive sports cars seized from narcotrafficantes.

Wow! Didn't take "zero" long to figure out who his real enemy is...them "bitter clingers". Seems like that was his first priority.
