N.C. loses 41,000 jobs, but unemployment rate barely moves
Triangle Business Journal ^ | April 17, 2009 | Lee Weisbecker

The unemployment rate in North Carolina inched up by only 0.1 percentage point in March, to 10.8 percent – the smallest jump in five months. But that figure could be deceiving, some analysts said Friday.

Seasonally adjusted, total non-farm industry employment declined by 41,300 jobs during the month, points out John Quinterno of the Raleigh-based North Carolina Budget & Tax Center. That makes March the second worst month for job losses since the recession began in December 2007.

The North Carolina Employment Security Commission, which reported the unemployemnt numbers Friday, said that the total number of jobless workers, 492,512, is at an all-time high.

So, why the dramatic slowdown in what had been a soaring unemployment rate – one that was at 8.1 percent in December before jumping all the way to 10.7 percent in February?

Much excitement over the rate of job loss slowing down, but the statistics look peculiar. U-6 should tell the tale.

Most likely the press and others working to make it look as though Obama is turning things around when the exact opposite is actually the case. Never believe anything you read when our press is reporting it.

OH!

"The only sector to show a gain was government, which added 200 workers. The uptick was attributed to federal hiring."

Illegals don’t file for unemployment benefits.

The numbers are being spun, for sure. But, they’ve been suspect for over a year, in my observation. Looks to me as if the dam broke after the election, for whatever reason. Bush era folks throwing in the towel? Obama cheerleaders wanting to create the perfect crisis in order for their messiah to save us all? I don’t know. But, I do know that the unemployment situation here in NC is as bad as I’ve ever seen it, and I was working summer jobs as a teen during the last big recession in the early 80’s. Seven job hunters for every job opening, job fairs drawing 5,000 people with the line going all the way around the Greensboro Coliseum ... it’s real alright.

“N.C. loses 41,000 jobs, but unemployment rate barely moves”

Let’s see.....the 41,000 jobs were done by illegal aliens? Who else would have their job cut and not be able to collect unemployment?

Illegals don’t file for unemployment benefits.

Neither do independent contractors, nor s-corp small business owners. I was caught in that trap myself; paid unemployment to the ESC for over a decade, and when my time of need came, not one thin dime. I was fortunate that a former customer hired me, but it was a very scary six months, from the time the bottom fell out of sales until I started work. I literally prayed to God for a job, nothing fancy, just enough to meet my needs, and He delivered.

It takes a physical toll. Find a way to get out and about, network, volunteer, keep yourself busy. It may sound sort of trite, but anything is better than sitting in the house, day after day, worrying yourself sick and imagining worst case outcomes, no matter how much money you think you’re saving by doing so. Panic attacks are no fun at all, imagine being scared or startled, but it lasts for hours. It all really put me through the wringer, never once having been unemployed or without an income, in my adult life.

Simple, the statistician decides that 41,000 unemployed stopped looking for work that same month. Problem solved.

I figured they tweaked that nebulous “birth-death model,” myself. That game’s been being played for over a year now.

Anyway, His will be done, right?

On top of knowing several people who have been laid off or have lost their jobs, my husband’s company’s NC office is closing. We won’t know for a coupla weeks whether he is gonna be unemployed or moving to the new office in Illinois. I cannot go with him because of my sick mother and the kids, it will be like a military deployment. We are praying for strength. Have not told the kids or my mother because it will be devastating. NC is not an employment friendly state. It will be three years before I can move with him. Not a great situation. If my mother were healthy and the kids were outta school, I would move to SC or Tn. Have you all thought of moving?

I've learned much during this ordeal. I've learned humility. I've learned that fear is not of God. Lift your burden up to Him in humble repentance, as often as you need to do so, to find His peace. Don't be afraid of specific prayer. Let Him open a new door for you. Ask. His will will be done, always.

In Michigan people are surrounded by the same. Businesses can’t leave the state fast enough. The Wall Street Journal wrote a few months ago, “If you like what Jennifer Granholm has done for Michigan, you are going to LOVE what Obama will do for the nation.” With a complicit press, he can destroy this nation for years to come and the press will do everything they can to blind the public to the crisis until it reaches the point where even the press can’t cover for him - or until they can find a Republican to blame.

Wow, your situation makes mine look pleasant. I’ve got older parents in the area as well, so I can’t move very far. Plus my wife’s business keeps her nailed down here.

Good to know I can brighten someone’s day. We are not in a lot of debt, as long as one of us works, we can just pay the necessary bills.

Didn't mean to make light of your situation. I can imagine how tough things must be.

Here's to a brighter economic future for both of us.

I have been thru worse, so I don’t feel like you were making light of it. I agree, here is to the bright future. I think it helps to know someone is in worse shape, gives you some perspective. Cheers! Praise God, that I am even walking around.
