LOS ANGELES He's still got a little work to do on the economy, but already President Barack Obama has accomplished at least one task that had appeared all but impossible just a year ago: He's put The Dead back on the road.
As the core surviving members of the Grateful Dead, once the world's biggest concert draw, barrel across the country for the first time in five years, bass player Phil Lesh says they have Obama, and also Lesh's youngest son, Brian, to thank.
After Lesh, who had never publicly supported a presidential candidate, threw his lot in with Obama, he was anxious to do a benefit concert for him. But he was all but done with The Dead, so it was going to feature his other band, Phil and Friends.

they’ve gotta be kidding.
they’re only now noticing how many dead acorn resurected for 0bama???
Well, they ARE from San Francisco, so what do you expect? Now if Obama could resurrect Jerry, that’d be an accomplishment. I’m gonna go to a couple of these shows anyway. I love the Garcia/Hunter songbook, and there aren’t many bands I want to go hear. Seen Phil & Friends a couple of times. My wife and I are looking forward to it. Should be fun.
Every Democrat in the Chicago machine resurrects the dead. SO what’s new?
Warren Haynes, late of The Allman Brothers Band, and Govt. Mule.
Excellent guitarist, but hard to picture fitting in with the Dead, musical style wise.
Please, no Hell-en Thomas pix here.
I’ve seen Warren with the Dead before. They intentionally avoid getting someone Jerry-esque. I sort of wish they would get someone Jerryish—clean, sparkly tone, melodic, jazzy. But they don’t want to, so be it. Warren is very servicable. He can sing, he can play, he knows what he’s doing. I get very, very tired of the many Duane/Dickey clones out there—the Les Paul/saturated tone, the BB King licks through a Marshall, etc, but he’s got soul and he’s competent.
