The long road back (Conservatism in the wilderness)
The Spectator (UK) ^ | Apr 15, 2009 | David Frum

. . . .Obama has been in office nearly three months.. . . Obama has not yet raised taxes. He has not yet introduced a healthcare plan. He has not yet detailed a climate-change policy. He has declined to rescue the automobile companies.

SNIP

Yet to listen to Fox News and other conservative media, you’d think we were living in Czechoslovakia in the final hours before the 1948 communist coup. Anchors end interviews by solemnly pledging to defend liberty and oppose tyranny. The network’s rising star Glenn Beck has mused about the coming turn to totalitarianism — and warned his audience that he has not been able to ‘debunk’ fears that the Federal Emergency Management Agency is constructing an archipelago of concentration camps for political opponents of the Obama administration.

The Republican congressional delegation is less hysterical, but not more convincing. While free-market economists have devised credible alternative economic plans — emphasising above all a year-long suspension of the 12.6 per cent Social Security payroll tax — congressional Republicans have either denied the seriousness of the downturn, or called for balancing the budget first, or united around a scattered grab-bag of tax proposals exciting only to the interest groups that would benefit from them.

There are signs of hope. Republicans can muster forward-looking governors: Jon Huntsman of Utah, for example, a Mandarin-speaking business-friendly conservative who has shown unusual openness on environmental issues and a softer line on social issues; Charlie Crist of Florida, who assembled a deal to restore Florida’s uneconomic sugarlands as the state’s environmentally vital Everglades; Bobby Jindal of Louisiana, who is bringing good government practices to a notoriously corrupt state; Mitch Daniels of Indiana, who has successfully extended health insurance coverage to more than 130,000 uninsured state residents.

I thought there’d be something new in that but it’s just another story about how good it’s going to be if we all move left.

He has not yet detailed a climate-change policy

He did that before the election when he said his plan would bankrupt the coal power plants and that electric prices would "necessarily skyrocket". He said "my plan".

The author needs to get his facts straight, Obama has raised taxes, on all tobacco products.

Why would I waste any moment of my time reading what this bozo has to say? At least there’s some forensic value in reading the ranting of a leftist who is upfront about embracing who they are - but the ramblings of Frum?

. .Obama has been in office nearly three months.. . . Obama has not yet raised taxes. He has not yet introduced a healthcare plan. He has not yet detailed a climate-change policy...Frum continues to try to justify and defend his absurd support of Obama during the election - Obama intends to do all these things at his earliest opportunity - you may stand on the tracks until the train hits you to make sure it's coming your way, Frum, but those of us with a bit of common sense know you get out of the way or try to reroute the train as soon as you can........

David Frum needs to go stick his head in a toilet somewhere until his brain clears up—assuming that he still has one.

“Anchors end interviews by solemnly pledging to defend liberty and oppose tyranny.”

I’m quite happy that news anchors will pledge to do that. Better that they do that now, then that we have our liberty further eroded, and wind up wondering what happened.

Why does Frum spend all his time trying to discredit conservatives?

Has anyone read any complaints by Frum about Democrats lately? Lets see, his plan for Republican victory is to liberalize conservatism by acquiescence to the globalist warmers and yielding to the gay agenda while dropping all objections to abortions and, of course, embracing softer, gentler socialized healthcare, all of which will mean higher taxes, bigger government and ever creeping infringement on individualism. Frum loves Democrats so much he wants Republicans to become just like them. Democrat lite doesn’t sell, as we found out in 06 and 08, and come 2010, it won’t be what people want to hear. The new, Nazi improved brand of Marxism on the Potomac is going to wear thin fast, and Democrats are going to get a taste of the sour grapes they’ve been dealing out for decades. It may even get bad enough to shame guys like Frum who preach at Republicans while voting for Democrats. Who knows? When it comes to RINOs, who cares?

A RINO is someone who claims to be a Republican while criticizing other Republicans and conservatives, but never uttering a disparaging word against Democrats or their liberal policies. They divide the Republican Party so the Democrats can win. They are Democrats with an incremental approach to socialist economics, social decay and the growing irrelevance of the Constitution and federalism.
