Obama Cites Debunked Claim That Most Guns in Mexico Come From U.S.
CNN ^ | April 16, 2009

"A demand for these drugs in the United States is what is helping keep these cartels in business ... more than 90% of the guns recovered in Mexico come from the United States," President Barack Obama said Thursday.

However, Fox News debunked this claim weeks ago: "It's just not true. In fact, it's not even close. The fact is, only 17 percent of guns found at Mexican crime scenes have been traced to the U.S."

17% could be closer to the accurate percentage—if you are not familiar with the arms manufacturing industry and laws in the US, it might seem from TV reports that more come from the US. In reality, the US arms industry was long ago diminished by the decline in hunting and other factors in the US accompanied by the rise in foreign manufacture. Also, full auto, RPG’s, grenades and the like are virtually impossible to own in the US or are so heavily regulated and traced that it is doubtful any have gone to Mexico. For guns that DO exist in the US, few are made in the US other than Rugers, Smith and Wessons, and some Remingtons. These are more costly and not as available as the AK-types which are made in other countries as are many handguns and other arms. Guns made in Hungary, Brazil, Russia, etc are simply much cheaper than guns made in the US and have taken over much of the market. The US is simply not a gun making country like it was in the 19th century.

Agreed. I am not very familiar with gun manufacturing but I am aware that fully automatic AKs are not manufactured here. My only gun experience was M1, M16 and M1911A1. Allow that I was replying to a contribution to a person attempting to defend the 90% statement and the key point I was making was the final sentence. “So why did he say 90% if there is no factual support for that number”

Of course it’s a lie, and it makes no sense on the face of it. Guns could come up from anywhere south of Mexico lots easier than north of Mexico. THAT border, OURS with THEIRS
is already being patrolled for ILLEGALS! Worse for illegals with guns , who really would be likely to be shot if those guns were brandished.
THE FIRST THING I thought when I heard this story and noted that this little suspicious “detail” about guns from the USA helping the Mexican drug trade, was that it was a very clever way of letting this Administration loose on their already thwarted project of getting our guns banned , confiscated, or threatening to do so, not because it wants to, but because it would help kill the worst aspects of the bloody Mexican drug cartel/
Once they float this trial balloon with the fictitious
“guns are coming from the US” and see how it flies, they can proceed with impunity. Clever bastards, aren’t they?
Just watch how this happens.
And watch how they make the case for this, and how they turn all resistance from legitimate gun owners into satisfying the minimum daily requirements for all that bilge that was just released in the DHS “extremist” document.

“President Felipe Calderon and his top prosecutor told The Associated Press on Thursday that Mexican police and soldiers are dangerously outgunned because U.S. authorities are failing to stop the smuggling of high-powered weapons into Mexico.

“We need to stop the flow of guns and weapons towards Mexico,” President Calderon told AP. “Let me express to you that we’ve seized in this two years more than 25,000 weapons and guns, and more than 90 percent of them came from United States, and I’m talking from missiles launchers to machine guns and grenades.”

The U.S. State Department said on Friday that U.S.-purchased or stolen weapons account for 95 percent of Mexico’s drug related killings, and that Mexican cartels are increasingly carrying out contract killings in the U.S.

The Brookings Institution has estimated that 2,000 guns enter Mexico from the United States every day.”

How did all those guns get there? Are US citizens smuggling them in? Are Mexicans living in the US smuggling them there? Be it 17% or 90% or somewhere in between, that’s a lot of guns that got thru border patrol or even flown or shipped in. What to make of this??.....

They say AK-47 because it is the only weapon they know about.

They are following the playbook. Guess who wrote the playbook? This will shock you, but J. Edgar Hoover.
Details: Mr. Hoover wrote a book that was published in 1957 entitled “Masters of Deceit”. It was a warning about the communist party members here in the US. I re read it about a year ago and got a real scary feeling. The Democratic party national level operatives are following this book. And now the bamster is putting their ideas into action at a very rapid pace. The only thing they are not doing is active sabotage. These people are playing for keeps and it has become very apparent that the dim party and their media are no longer loyal to this country. Their loyalty is to the party only.

There are two numbers in the story: 90% and 17%. And both are exaggerations. The independent website Politifact.com reach the same conclusion I reached: http://politifact.com/truth-o-meter/article/2009/apr/16/sorting-out-truth-about-guns-mexico/

Heard a radio commentator say that the US Govt has provided (over the years) many assault weapons to the Mexican Govt. Also that over 100,000 of the Mexican military have also deserted over the years, many likely to have taken their machine guns, etc with them. Plus the members of the Mexican military who have sold military goods to drug dealers, etc.

The rest of the USA sourced assault weapons such as AK47’s, M16’s, grenade launchers, RPG’s, etc were from KMart, Walmart and Big5 Sporting Goods stores of course. Same place USA citizens get their AK47’s, etc.

Oh, the horrors of it all.

So much simpler just to ban crime with guns, knives, etc.
After all, making illegal drugs illegal completely took them off the streets. Total success story!

How many of these US guns are from LEGAL shipments sold to the Mexican government and then sold on the black market?

More importantly, they also mention hand grenades, rocket launchers and all sorts of other stuff in these reports. Question, when was the last time you went down to check out the new grenade launchers at Academy Sports? Or the new “spring colors” for this years hand grenades at Wal-Mart?

This is BS! If 90% of the weapons in Mexico were from legally purchased weapons that were then sold or shipped illegally to Mexico, they would be frog-marching people on the nightly “news” shows to stress the importance of this problem! Total BS!
