Global Warming Is 'Very Real for Us,' Palin Says
Associated Press ^ | April 14, 2009 | Kim Murphy

(AP) — ANCHORAGE, Alaska -- Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin acknowledged Tuesday that global warming was harming her state but said stepped-up natural-gas production could mitigate its effects.

Speaking at a hearing before Interior Secretary Ken Salazar -- the third of several he is holding to consider renewed oil and gas leasing on the Outer Continental Shelf -- Palin said that relatively clean-burning natural gas could supplant dirtier fuels and slow the discharge of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere.

"We Alaskans are living with the changes that you are observing in Washington," she said. "The dramatic decreases in the extent of summer sea ice, increased coastal erosion, melting of permafrost, decrease in alpine glaciers and overall ecosystem changes are very real to us."

All the potential Presidential candidates of the future from - Romney to Huntsman to Crist to Pawlenty to Palin to Sanford - acknowledge climate change. If they believe in climate change fine. Its what they want to do with climate change is what matters.

"Simply waiting for low-carbon-emitting renewable capacity to be large enough will mean that it will be too late to meet the mitigation goals for reducing (carbon dioxide) that will be required under most credible climate change models," she warned.

I am a strong Palin supporter but I can also read. And the above statement tells me that Palin now believes that carbon dioxide producing activites need to be reduced because they are altering our climate. How is that belief any different from what Al Gore believes?

If you go and read the whole statement on the State of Alaska website you will see that she was calling Salazars bluff concerning statements he made at his confirmation.

I have tried to use this science and logic to debate the human impact on the global environment.

I have gone one step further to put it into perspective. How would you describe the climate in a man made greenhouse? Humid? What is it that so effectively keeps a “greenhouse” warm?

I hope it is a political ploy to get more fuel/energy independent.

If she is not playin' the leftists, that's disappointing.

Are they any American politicians willing to publicly call "global warming" the hoax that it is?

I didn't know up front so I had to look.... not surprised at what I found on my congresscritter:

“The science is on our side on this one, and the science indicates that human activity is not the cause of all this global warming. And that in fact, nature is the cause, with solar flares, etc.” Michele Bachmann

FR is overloaded with malcontents

FR is a place where people exchange opinions, and we are all entitled to one. The people you label as malcontents may have the same opinion about you.

Global warming according to many on FR is a scam, and it is according to my city's local weatherman it is as well. IMHO it is now much more understandable why Sarah Palin and John McCain were so aligned.

I absolutely will not vote for Palin unless she has the courage to come out against the Global Warming Hoax!

Eh, she’s just using the topic (and rather smartly) to push the natural-gas pipeline, for her state. No reason to go all nutso here. Global warming and global cooling are natural events, and go on all the time. It’s not as if she came out and stated all this was due to ‘man-made’ causes (that would be a whole different ball-game, and be a legitimate reason for us to rail at her a bit).

Then how could "stepped-up natural-gas production" act to "mitigate its effects"?

Shhhhh, the leftists might fall for it!

I believe she is simply saying that even according to global warming models (some of which are not constructed on the basis of natural warming, not man-made), waiting for their so-called green renewables won't do the trick. She is saying oil production is necessary no matter what.

Very crafty wordsmiths trying to make her seem or say something she's not...including the deceptive use of headlines. Be careful.

I doubt that either one actually believes in man-caused global warming. Until proved otherwise, its looking like Sarah is willing to sell out her principles for polital gain. Gore just promotes the global warming thing because he makes big bucks doing it.

Sarah needs to look into Alaska’s history, and see that there have been warmer days, when CO2 levels were lower than they are today. Apart from that, I hope she hasn’t bought into the global warming scam.

It seems to me that most of the alternative fuels that could replace good old diesel and gasoline produce water vapor as exhaust, creating a real greenhouse effect. CO2 is our friend.

She is technically correct. As long as she doesn’t blame human emitted CO2 for it, that is.

No, she isn't. Not technically, nor generally.

I don’t believe in the Al gore global warming and this is not what gov. Palin is saying.

Go read the article. She didn't mention Al Gore specifically, but in her testimony she was all over the road in a politically equivocal mish-mash of some "technically correct" points along with several of the scientifically discredited doctrinaire assertions of the global warming/climate change "religionists".

Palin may actually understand the issue, and simply felt it necessary to play the political games of equivocation and accommodation in order to get help for her state. I can understand and accept that. However, her performance was sloppy, and the words she actually used inaccurate and ill-chosen.

As Kent C noted in post #40 "The earth is not warming but in the last decade it’s cooling and the longer term span that the ecowackos assert, is based on data and computer models that were cooked and fit to match their dreams. ... Palin should know this and the fact that she doesn’t indicates an absense of information that is necessary to defeat the Left on this issue. When you buy the premise, they’ve got you. No amount of ‘agreement’ with their principles matter."

there are people on this thread who wern’t for Gov. Palin to begin with.

And I'm not one of them.

FR is overloaded with malcontents

It's also loaded with people who let their personal enthusiasm for "their" candidate, etc. switch-off or override their ability to think and analyze things for themselves.

It's different because she's Saint Sarah who is absolutely perfect and above all criticism. The Palin-worshippers simply aren't interested in facts, and they never have been.

Global warming may or may not be happening currently -- I can't find any figures on it I truly trust. Cyclic warming and cooling are natural processes that have occurred time and time again over billions of years.

The hoax is that humans are somehow causing it and that limiting our CO2 production will "cure" it. That's a sinister political lie for gullible people.

Some. But there's also Palin-worshipers who ARE interested in the facts, and will turn on her in a heartbeat if she turns out to be a fraud.
