PRINCETON, N.J., April 14 (UPI) -- Just less than half of U.S. residents asked say the amount of federal income taxes they pay is "about right," a Gallup Poll indicated.
Forty-eight percent of respondents said they paid their fair share of taxes, while 46 percent of those asked said they paid too much, the Princeton, N.J., polling agency said, noting it was one of the most positive assessments measured since 1956.
Typically, a majority of Americans say taxes are too high and very few say taxes are too low, Gallup said.
Since 1956, there has been only one other time when a higher percentage of Americans said their taxes were about right, Gallup said. After two rounds of tax cuts under former President George W. Bush in 2003, 50 percent said their tax bill was proper.
In the 2009 poll, Gallup said slim majorities of lower- and middle-income Americans said they pay about the right amount of taxes, while upper-income Americans indicated they pay too much.
Results are based on nationwide telephone interviews with 1,027 adults conducted April 6-9. The margin of error is 3 percentage points.

Uhhh... pardon me if this is a stupid question, but don’t just under half of US Residents pay no feral income tax at all?
Besides, don’t let anyone snow you with talk of feral income taxes. That is small potatoes compared to the overall tax (and fee) bite.
Well, most Americans want the streets swarming with armed city employees too. That also does not make for a free people. But hey, Americans don’t really want to be free. They want a King.

The public response has been amazing, most believe the income tax was a constitutional provision from the start...and they really believe in wealth redistribution.
It really is sad the level of ignorance in this country.
Big surprise considering that 40% of the people pay no taxes at all. The sad thing is that it’s the productive people who are getting screwed while the leeches on society sit back and bitch ‘cause they’re not getting enough.
I’ll be damned if I ever have to pay a dime in feral income taxes.
I wonder if they would still say that if we abolished withholding.

Frankly, I don’t know anyone who thinks they pay just about the right amount of taxes.
Close. But I'd say that half squeals the loudest that they pay TOO MUCH. because they want more handouts from us to pay their mortgages, utilities, utilities, cars, tuition, etc.
Don't worry about it. My wife and I are taking care of you and everyone on this thread, and several more on top of that.
The Obama taxes havent kicked in yet. Be patient.

Meaningless. One more example of how a group with an agenda such and partisan operatives can get a poll to say anything they want.
Run a poll for; “is the tax amount you pay about right” amongst a group of people who pay little to no tax and live on government handouts and presto - answer achieved.
