Likely Opponent In Primary Looks to Tap Anger on Right.
BY PERRY BACON JR.
PHILADELPHIA, April 13 -- Sen. Arlen Specter's support for President Obama's stimulus package has recharged a political rivalry, setting up what could be a divisive rematch between one of the GOP's leading moderates and a powerful conservative activist.
Pat Toomey, head of the anti-tax Club for Growth, stepped down from the post Monday, the first move in what his aides say is an almost-certain run against Specter in next year's Republican Senate primary. In the 2004 primary, Specter defeated Toomey by 17,000 votes out of more than 1 million cast.
Even though the race is a year away, Specter has taken the rare step of running attack ads against Toomey, attempting to link his work as a trader on Wall Street in the 1980s and 1990s with the current economic crisis.
. . . . .
Sen. John Cornyn (R-Tex.), head of the National Republican Senatorial Committee, has written a letter to fellow Republicans asking them to support Specter.

Once again Cornyn proves why it’s time for him to go.
Remember RINO season opens soon. No bag limit.
Well, if I was being a devil's advocate, I might mention that maybe Cornyn is trying to make sure Specter votes against card check and some other things that would require fillibuster. I might, but I might not.
If you stand with the Devil, you'll get the horns.
AMERICA IS SICK OF NOT BEING HEARD, AND LIES TO COVER CORRUPT ACTION STEMMING FROM CONGRESS MEMBERS' EGO & DESIRE FOR POWER ----NO MATTER WHAT PARTY IT COMES FROM.
One-term Senator. Just called his office and his local office hadn’t heard about the letter. Time for him to go back to private practice.
Cornyn will not get my vote...throw all the ba$#tards out and start over is my thoughts for 2010 especially butt wipe RINO’s like Spector and Cornyn!
Once again, we see why we should give money directly to the candidate, and not to the NRSC.
Cornyn is a good senator. But he’s not perfect. Specter is still important on issues coming up and we need his support. Cornyn is playing smart cards here; I imagine it’s distasteful to him too.

Which is why the NRSC will not get ONE CENT from me!
My money will go here instead.

Can we make an “Arlen Sphincter truth file”?
CORNYN???? I thought he was one of the good guys!! WTF??
Just had a pleasant email exchange with my local (Conservative) Republican legislator last night concerning Specter's effort to open the GOP primary to Rats and Independents. He said that Specter is dead in the water as far as the state GOP is concerned.
I wonder if Palin regets fund raising for National Republican Senatorial Committee.
The text of this morning’s fax to Senator Cornyn’s Washington office follows:
Senator Cornyn:
As you know I have been a supporter of yours, through thick and thin, for a very long time now but I must inform you that if, in your capacity as Senatorial Campaign Committee Chairman, you continue your support of Senator Arlen Spector over Pat Toomey I will no longer support you for the office you currently hold and will actively seek to find a suitable replacement.
I just emailed the NRSC and told them how I felt about Cornyn’s support for the traitor Specter. Suggest everyone do the same:
I thought he was convicted yesterday? /s
Done!
Specter was repeatedly asked about the stimulus bill and its effect on the economy, and everyone around him seemed aware that the topic probably would define his future. That's the most despicable thing I've read in a long time."You can minimize that and say it's just another vote, but this bill would not have passed if not for Arlen Specter," said Rep. Robert A. Brady (D-Pa.), who appeared with Specter in Darby and praised the longtime senator for his bipartisanship. "This stimulus package that we're going around and every congressman is passing out checks, all over the country, is because of a man named Arlen Specter."
Specter OUT!
