(2nd LD) Seoul decides to join PSI, announcement due Wednesday

(ATTN: UPDATES throughout with Seoul's decision on PSI membership)

SEOUL, April 14 (Yonhap) -- South Korea decided Tuesday to participate in the U.S.-led global effort to curb the spread of weapons of mass destruction, but it withheld announcing it until President Lee Myung-bak signs a related document, a diplomatic source said.

Seoul's widely anticipated decision to join the Proliferation Security Initiative (PSI) came at a regular Cabinet-level meeting on foreign and security policy, presided over by the country's top diplomat, Yu Myung-hwan, the source added.

Have to wait until the real announcement is made. It was supposed to be announced earlier, but serious disagreement among government and ruling party led to its delay. Some RINO types inside ruling camp was apparently holding it back while foreign ministry wanted to go ahead with PSI.

It’s very important to have S. Korea on board. We need to strengthen our alliance with them. They are a very important ally to the U.S.
