To be honest, he does not follow the teachings of the current Pope and has denied Vatican II, so he is pretty much not in communion with the Catholic Church anyway.
As for his wife(I think she is a Lutheran?) not going to heaven, as a so called Catholic, it is not for him to say that. As a Catholic, we are taught that God is indeed merciful, and that he takes all things into consideration in regards to who goes to Heaven or hell. If she was never taught the Catholic faith, she cannot be expected to live according to the teachings of the church. That was really up to Mel to teach her. He is in much worse shape than her in my opinion. How do you bring someone around to your teachings if you are a heavy drinker, carouser and now an adulterer.
Just my opinion though.
I can top you when it comes to the sacrament of confession. It was just over 15(closer to 16) years since I had last gone to confession. I finally did go, and I have to say that the priest was excited about having me come back. I too had broken just about every commandment. I guarantee you that your confession will not be as hard as you think!
As for your marriage, If you do come back, you can still get married in the Catholic church despite the fact that your significant other is not a Catholic. I don't know how it is dealt with if you did get married in a different church though? You should definitely contact a priest in a parish near you. I am sure that he would be more than happy to explain it all to you. God bless you and please, come on back!
Our marriage was a civil one in a wedding chapel. Not in his church. I am going to go to mass for about a year and prayer on it, as I do not want to change my mind again in another 15 years. It’s perfect timing, though, because it means I will be fully back next Easter.
LOL!
I disagree. Gibson’s work was brilliant, regardless of what he said in a drunken (and I think manic) rage. I believe in forgiveness and would never hold anyone to what was said in that state.
Absolutely no question that he knows it if he's a practicing Catholic. It's very basic stuff.
if he really cares... I could not answer that, but pray that he does care.
First of all, Gibson was driving drunk, was arrested and therefore is a criminal.
Second, he publicly stated that "the Jews are responsible for all the wars in the world."
Finally, I do not care how "brilliant" Mel's work may have been, he publicly outed himself as an anti-Semite.
And as an Catholic, an American, a husband of a Jewish woman and father of Jewish children, I can have no respect for a man who spews such hate.
Um, nice rant but not accurate. It was Mel’s Dad who said Jews were responsible for all the wars in the world.
“Um, nice rant but not accurate. It was Mels Dad who said Jews were responsible for all the wars in the world.”
Well according to the L.A. County Sheriff’s Department it was Mel Gibson, not his dad, who was arrested for drunk driving and said after he had been arrested:
“F*****g Jews... The Jews are responsible for all the wars in the world.”

On Saturday, Gibson released the following statement:
"After drinking alcohol on Thursday night, I did a number of things that were very wrong and for which I am ashamed. I drove a car when I should not have, and was stopped by the LA County Sheriffs. The arresting officer was just doing his job and I feel fortunate that I was apprehended before I caused injury to any other person. I acted like a person completely out of control when I was arrested, and said things that I do not believe to be true and which are despicable. I am deeply ashamed of everything I said. Also, I take this opportunity to apologize to the deputies involved for my belligerent behavior. They have always been there for me in my community and indeed probably saved me from myself. I disgraced myself and my family with my behavior and for that I am truly sorry. I have battled with the disease of alcoholism for all of my adult life and profoundly regret my horrific relapse. I apologize for any behavior unbecoming of me in my inebriated state and have already taken necessary steps to ensure my return to health."
And as you underlined in the statement he denounced those things said when he was DRUNK (and, again, I believe manic). But, Heaven forbid, we actually give anyone any forgiveness. No, just continue to label him an anti-Semite. As for being a “criminal” for driving drunk. If that is how you want to characterize it, that is fine. He was held accountable for it. Bush and Cheney were “criminals” then too. But I still respect them and forgive them for their past deeds.
OK
I am not one who believes we should excuse people for their actions simply because they blame said actions on being drunk. If that were the case we would release all the people from prison who were drunk when the murdered, robbed or molested a child. And unless you are Mel's personal psychiatrist, I do not think you are in a position to diagnose a condition of "manic."

Yes, being charged with DUI or DWI makes one a criminal.
And if you do not believe drunk driving is a crime, please call your local MADD office and ask if you can speak to a mother who had to burry a child due to the criminal actions of a person who drove their vehicle drunk.
And yes, saying the the Jews have caused all the wars makes one an anti-Semite.
And if you do not believe that, please call the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum and ask to speak to a survivor of the Holocaust.
You are proving yourself to be one of the most obnoxious asshats ever to infect FR, working hard to be an insulting prick who ignores what posters write in order to spittle out your particular effluent. [prick= annoying little nettle, nothing more]
No, I simply refuse to be an apologist for drunk drivers and anti-Semites.
So how does that excuse your insulting, purposely dismissive posts to other Freepers? Buzz off ____fly.
