Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg is getting involved in an election other than his own this November, thanks to an issue he has long cared about: gun control.
Hoping to make a splash in the Virginia governors race, Mr. Bloomberg showed up here Monday to unveil a new commercial criticizing former Attorney General Robert F. McDonnell, the presumptive Republican nominee, who is a strong gun-rights supporter.
Mr. Bloomberg was joined about a dozen people, including survivors of the Virginia Tech shootings, their relatives, and Tatyana Timoshenko, the mother of Police Offcer Russel Timoshenko, who was fatally shot during a traffic stop in Crown Heights, Brooklyn, in 2007.
The 30-second ad timed to coincide with the second anniversary of the Virginia Tech shootings, on April 16 features Omar Samaha, whose sister, Reema, was one of the 32 people who died. Mr. Samaha calls for Virginia lawmakers to close what he argues is a gun-show loophole that allows private sellers to sell guns without background checks.
And in blunt language, the ad goes after Mr. McDonnell. Bob McDonnell wants to keep this loophole again, Mr. Samaha says. I know closing the loophole wont bring Reema back, but the question is: Whose sister is next? The ad concludes by saying, Ask Bob McDonnell why hes protecting criminals instead of protecting us.
Even though Mr. Bloombergs name is not mentioned, he is clearly the driving force. The ad is being financed by a group called Americans United for Safe Streets, a political action committee based in Washington that received $502,335 in contributions in 2008. Of that amount, $500,000 came from Mr. Bloomberg, and of the groups 12 contributors, 9 are from New York City, according to the Center for Responsive Politics.

Bloomberg is a bit late to push Virginia into tightening its gun control laws as the General Assembly session ended a few weeks ago.

McDonnell could really hammer the Dems with this in VA. I’m sure there is no love lost between everybody south of Northern VA and Twinkle-Toes Bloomberg.

Please, oh, please, my fellow Virginians, DO NOT stay home May 5 in NoVa. Get out and vote, especially in Alexandria City. If we all vote for the 2 Repubs and 1 Independent, and NOT for any dems, we have a shot, albeit small, at getting some balance on the City Council.
Bloomberg needs to take his sorry butt back to NY.

This thread has just added to the
FreeRepublic "bang list" (firearms interest list) by adding the keyword "banglist".
Any time a firearms-related thread is created on FreeRepublic, please be sure to add the "banglist" keyword to it so that interested FReepers don't miss it. Just a suggestion.

What many do not realize is that closing this "loophole" (which is a farse to begin with), will not prevent people from privately selling their firearms.
Government does not try to restrict an individual from privately selling his vehicle before first performing a background check on the intended buyer...and guess what? Motor vehicle accidents accounted for 1.8% of deaths in the United States, as opposed to 1.2% due to firearms.
As for Bloomberg...he is a moron and should have stayed in the stock market and out of politics

He shouldn’t be worried as much about us sending our guns up there as he should be when we start sending our bullets.

Mr. Samaha's sister was killed by Mr. Cho at Virginia Tech. Mr. Cho bought his firearms through fedrerally licensed dealers complying with all federal laws. The "gun show loophole" had nothing whatsoever to do with Mr. Samaha's sisters' death.
Keep educating your friends and relatives as to the lies being put forward by Bloomberg, The Brady Bunch, ABC news, and now Mr. Samaha. I will cut Mr. Samaha a little bit of slack because he is young, and is suffering from a deep loss, and obviously searching for some relief. The others know better, and are evil.

No law would have stopped the madman (Cho) from obtaining a firearm. That much is obvious to me.
