Set up some ships as floating honeytraps and send them into harms way. When the pirates approach uncover the big stuff and blow them out of the water.

One 50 cal and a trained gunman on the back of the boat could probably sink most of this filth.

Of course, it would. However, arms of any kind on a merchant ship are against the UN treaty governing "safe passage".

This treaty seems to be demonstrating -- on an international scale -- how gun control really works.

1) It'd be better to not do any sinking.

Most fiberglass boats under 21-feet have flotation. While such a boat would swamp to the gunwhales, it would not sink. An abandoned boat full of bullet holes would eventually wash up on shore. What better message for Somalians?

2) A trained gunman would not necessarily need to be "on board". Freighters could rendezvous with a fully armed Blackwater boat and tow it through hazardous Asian passages. A towed boat, even with no one on board, could be made to look like a "Q" ship. Maybe it's a plan that might even fly with "The Lawyer Party".
