At first the admiral said he did not have details. He apparently received some details during the briefing because he made a presentation of the hostage having a gun pointed directly at him. It was not clear how close the hostage was to the pirates. my take was that two were visible and shot and the third was shot when visible.
The hostage was put in a life preserver and loaded on a RBB, taken to the Bainbridge and then the Boxer.
The shooters were on the fantail of the Bainbridge, the lifeboat was under tow, the separation was 25-30 meters.

imminent danger..... not just danger.
Keep in mind the Navy escalated the tension by placing the life boat under tow. The pirates knew the jig was up. The threat became imminent. They pirates did not surrender.....they died.
One can only wonder about the other pirates involved withis incident. Where are they? Will Obama go get them?
