I'd assume the seals were in the water alongside the boat and signaled him from there. Probably by yelling "Jump!.

I've got to disagree with you here. This has all the hallmarks of Special Forces - and they probably developed a tactical plan, did live exercises, had to transit to the location, and then wait for late at night to catch the pirates mostly asleep. It looks like Obama gave the Pentagon leeway to conduct the op the way they wanted, and IMO that was a good thing.

That is not how Al Qaeda, Taliban, Iran, and the North Koreans will view it and it is all about perception. Make no doubt about it, these enemies have been greatly emboldened and they are going to cause a lot of harm because of this perception of weakness.

Because this was not a planned operation, It just sort of happened through fate and luck and most likely some big help from above. Both the WH and military are scrambling to put the correct PR spin on the story and not step on each others toes.

I recall similar grousing about how long it took the Afghanistan campaign to get going. Once it did, it was a doozy. What emboldens our enemy the most is failure, such as Carter's attempt to rescue the hostages. This action has thousands of sphincters puckering in ports along the Somali coast.
