My guess is also that I would not be surprised to find that yesterdays manuever by the small craft from the Bainbridge was repeated to fix the attention of the pirates when the SEALS were in position to act.
This is a perfect description of Mohammad. Who was Mohammad? he was a sand pirate. He made his living from robbing caravans and pillaging villages and cities.
What is the essence of Islam? It gives brigands and robbers sanction to pillage, rape, and plunder (as long as they are kind to fellow Islamic brigands).
1. Have the US Navy announce (no, not the State Dept or prez) this activity will no longer be tolerated.
2. Sink everything they put to sea which has no hostages aboard.
3. Capture as many as possible, waterboard them for info on the leadership and their assets.
4. Launch targeted strikes against pirate leadership.
5. Target one of their ports...seal it off with Airborne assault units...and send in sufficient firepower to destroy everything and everyone there. Rescue what hostages we can, of course. But, those captured ships must go back to sea.
The Navy did not act until they had approval from Obama.
I am sure they had plans in place days ago but were told to hold off. I am also sure those plans would have been successful as well--same boat, same situation, same waters. . .why Obama waited we don't know--unless we take into account he was reading the political tea-leaves and finally saw he better act.
The Navy acted when allowed to, not on their own timetable.
We have a very strong force in the immediate area now...and more coming. I believe they will act and that piracy will suffer a significant and abject defeat because of their terror on the high seas.
As well they should.

Well, the Pentagon asked him for approval, according to the AP. But it's academic, anyway. My point, for 2 days here, is that Obama would surprise us by supporting decisive action. He always plays against type. Everyone on this forum blasted him yesterday and said he would vacillate, pay their ransom, let them take the Capt. to shore, etc. We continually underestimate him, as Hillary and McCain did. He is no Jimmy Carter--at least in terms of having a tin ear for politics, as Jimmah did. He is as wily an adversary as we have ever faced.
You mean LHA or LHD. The last LPH was decommissioned in 1998.
The ACE of the embarked MEU on the Boxer is equipped with CH-53s, CH-46s and UH-1s and HSC-21 is also embarked with MH-60s.
