Cornyn applauds Obama on immigration reform
Houston Chronical ^ | 4-9-9 | Staff?

Here's what Cornyn said about the Obama White House's decision to re-open the public dialogue on immigration:

"I applaud President Obama's commitment to addressing comprehensive immigration reform this year, and stand ready to work with him to produce a product that represents the best interests of America, including respect for the rule of law, national security and economic security.

"Comprehensive, common-sense immigration reform remains a top priority for me. Any legislation must protect our borders, promote economic prosperity in Texas and throughout the United States, and be consistent with our American values of compassion, family and opportunity."

The rhetoric that flows on this topic is often devoid of commen sense.  Here we go again.

"I applaud President Obama's commitment to addressing comprehensive immigration reform this year, and stand ready to work with him to produce a product that represents the best interests of America, including respect for the rule of law, national security and economic security.

I don't applaud Obama's commitment to legalizing tens of millions of illegal immigrants on U.S. soil today.  I can't fathom any sane Conservative doing so.  Just how do you produce a product that
represents the best interests of America, including respect for the rule of law, national security and economic security by legalizing them?

Legalizing people who have broken all the rules, does not cause anyone to strive to abide by the rules in the future.  Allowing foreign nationals to displace U.S. workers or cause undue downward pressure on their ability to earn a decent wage, doesn't increase our national security or economic security.

All this effort will do is convince others who wish to come here illegally, that is will undoubtedly pay off with citizenship and government support.

Cornyn just destroyed any credibility he could have expected from me.

"Comprehensive, common-sense immigration reform remains a top priority for me.

Untrue.  Cornyn has demonstrated that he wants transition to citizenship at any cost.  His stated goals are unattainable by the type of comprehensive immigration reform he has signed on to.  The bill he supported last year was terminally flawed.

Any legislation must protect our borders, promote economic prosperity in Texas and throughout the United States, and be consistent with our American values of compassion, family and opportunity."

Good grief.  How is legalizing tens of millions of illegal immigrants going to protect our borders?  It will simply convince millions upon millions more that it is a fantastic idea to sneak into the United States.   How will Cornyn take all this back by 2050, when the Hispanic populace in the United States excedes 50%, and the Democrats have an absolute lock on elections?

Isn't it about time the values of our current U.S. Citizens are taken into consideration.  Don't these families deserve compassion and opportunity?

For the record, flooding our workforce with foreign nationals does not show respect for our Citizen's right to earn a decent living, and not be tasked with the burden of supporting a large body of people whether they are here legally or not.  Making these illegals citizens, WILL NOT stop their draining effects on the Citizens of our nation.  Where's the compassion in that Cornyn?

I hope that this is posturing for sealing the border because we are being over run down here. Everywhere I look. Seal the border first, stop the influx (the economy has made no change that I can see), get them out then do what the law says.

I agree with you about what needs to be done. Maybe I'm giving Cornyn too much credit, or it's just wishful thinking on my part... i guess we shall see.

So, you’re telling us that if 98% of Republicans vote against amnesty, you’ll abandon the party?

Brilliant.

Yep! I just called this three-mouthed hypocrite at his local Dallas office to confirm the paper's report.

The staffer didn't deny any of it.

I told him to pass along to Cornyn that he will unleash the ULTIMATE HORNET'S NEST if he pushes for another 40-50 million people (relatives of the illegals) coming here to usurp our resources--from schools to freeways to hospitals to social security--you name it!

I reminded the staff (and he swore he'd convey my message) that we already have enforcement mechanisms and that's where his initiatives belong. The path is on a boat back to any country from whence the lawbreaking invader came from--and that's the only euphemistic path (aka amnesty) Americans will tolerate, especially in these economic times.

The White House FAX machine is burning, too, just as it is to my rep and other "senator"--the feeble-minded Hutchison.

Regards . . . Penny

He only did that the last times because of pressure.

Here’s what he says now”

“and be consistent with our American values of compassion, family and opportunity.”

This is completely Bush-talk about opening up our labor markets to wage depression and hurting American families in the reverse logic of helping foreigners. Bush called opponents effectively racist and irreligious and used the words compassion and family.

The business lobbies are testing the waters with these fake news stories.

Good one!

These traitors, not “just” to our sovereignty and security, but to the destruction of our medical systems, school systems, the theft of our jobs and Federal/State benefits that SHOULD be going to American citizens...must be stopped!!!
Pandering to ILLEGALS is what brought on the economic mess to begin with...there should be NO more mortgages, auto loans, bank accounts, wire transfers OR birthright citizenships. In fact, IMO, ALL immigration should be halted until our economy recovers.

>> Cornyn is UNPREDICTABLE, at best.

Cornyn is no more unpredictable than the direction of the prevailing political winds.

If you can tell which way the wind might be blowing, then you can get pretty good at predicting John Cornyn.

Never had any reason to trust Cornyn.

I've emailed him 15 times in the recent past about his position on varying policies. I only received 1 reply, and it was a weak reply at that..

I can't believe that he was just re-elected.

Cornyn just won reelection in 2008, so he has five and a-half more years before he’d be up again. He might go the way of John Kyl, strong opponent of amnesty the year before he faced the voters in 2006, then a major 180 to become one of the strongest pro-amnesty senators.

Let’s hope Cornyn doesn’t flip-flop as Kyl did. And I wonder where Kyl will come down on the issue this time?

Hide & Watch:

Cornyn will be strong on illegal immigration and strong on border control.

I didn't read anything in his statement that makes me think otherwise.

The bill he supported last year was terminally flawed.

If you mean the McCain/Kennedy amnesty, that was 2007, not last year. Also, Cornyn voted against it and played a major role in killing it.

But that was before he won his senate reelection in November. I called his DC office today to to say that I and my family are saddened and angry at his betrayal of the overwhelming majority of his constituents. I don't see how one can support US sovereignty while being in favor of "comprehensive immigration reform," which has always been a euphemism for "amnesty with a pretense of immigration enforcement." It's not even honest amnesty.

I would like to believe that some of our congress-critters have some virtue, but that is becoming increasingly difficult. With so many in government eager to betray what this nation should stand for, I wonder how much longer its virtue can last.

Cornyn will be strong on illegal immigration and strong on border control.

Then why would he say he is for "comprehensive immigration reform," which has always meant amnesty with a false promise of enforcement? And why does it have to be this year? With the Dems in control, he is just daring them to push a hideous amnesty bill.

His overall record on immigration is pretty good, but he had to be coerced regularly by Grassfire and numbersusa to vote the right way. I think his tendency is to just be wishy washy.
