Defense officials say that one of the pirates holding an American captive fired an automatic weapon when the hostage tried to swim to safety.

Defense officials say it's not clear whether the pirate fired at the fleeing hostage, or into the air. The officials spoke Friday on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to talk about the sensitive, unfolding operation.

I understand (from reports) that there is a SEAL team on the freighter en route to Kenya.. I can understand a armed Boarding party to safe guard it's passage, but it doesn’t rate a SEAL team..
That said , I don't understand why the Brainbridge doesn't have it's whale boat or RIB in the water near by to take advantage of situations like the Captain going overboard.
It's helo should be in the air as much as possible as well as bring a relief helo from another ship...
I fear the the Brainbridge was sent to “Show the Flag” and try to frighten them into giving up..with orders not to fire under ANY circumstances..Considering the primary mission of the US Navy is to “ Keep the sealanes open”.. this is a sad state of affairs of the Navy I served in for 28years

The pirates are a protected class. See BlackHawk Down. The Army begged for tanks (M1 & Bradleys) but the Congressional Black Caucus told Clinton NO tanks will be used against Africans. We had to ask the Malaysians to help with an old tank of theirs to evacuate the troops after they were under fire all night.

We need a very good attorney, ex-JAG officer to take a case to SCOTUS with thousands of active duty as John & Jane Doe to protect them and demand the BC or proof of NBC. Let SCOTUS tell our soldiers they have no standing. At that point we will know that SCOTUS will not protect The Constitution.

How far away is our destroyer from the lifeboat anyway? How far have they been ordered to stay away? I would think that unless CIC ordered them to stay far enough away to be of no help, they would have been able to get to the Captain when he escaped.

How about educating the obviously ignorant? Block 1B Phalanx Surface Mode (PSUM) incorporates a side mounted Forward Looking Infrared Radar (FLIR) which enables CIWS to engage low slow or hovering aircraft and surface craft.

Further, they have thermal imager Automatic Acquisition Video Tracker (AAVT) and stablilization system that provide surface mode and electro-optic (EO) angle track. These Block 1B enhancements will allow day/night detection capability and enable the CIWS to engage small surface targets, slow-moving air targets, and helicopters.
