WASHINGTON (AFP) Bad news for those fearful of "creeping socialism" in the United States -- only 53 percent of Americans now believe capitalism is the better system, according to a new poll Thursday.
Fully 20 percent in the Rasmussen Reports survey said that socialism was their preferred economic system -- a startling number that suggests growing disaffection as the "land of the free" fights its worst recession in decades.
Republican critics fret that President Barack Obama's big-spending recovery policies amount to an un-American "creeping socialism," but Rasmussen said its findings pointed to suspicion of business and government elites alike.
It noted that in another survey last month, two out of three Americans said that big government and big business often collude to undermine the interests of consumers and investors.
Meanwhile in another Rasmussen survey in late December, as Obama prepared to take power, 70 percent of respondents said they preferred a free-market economy.
"The fact that a 'free-market economy' attracts substantially more support than 'capitalism' may suggest some skepticism about whether capitalism in the United States today relies on free markets," the pollsters said.
Rasmussen said its poll question did not define capitalism or socialism. Twenty-seven percent were not sure which is better.

47% of Americans are dumbasses. Where the hell do they think the tax revenue comes from to pay for Socialism?
I’m sure a significant percentage of respondents couldn’t describe what they support. Sad.
Results of a government education.
The sheeple are “educated” in government run “institutions of lower living” infested with Marxists and socialist. This is not surprising.
B R A I N W A S H E D; thank Liberals and the NEA
Also the result of pop culture. Nothing is sacred anymore, and people just want to sit around, get fat, and be entertained.
Absolutely. I agree.
The Sheeple ain’t gonna like what they’re gonna get!!! A quick trip to any third-world country should do them just fine.
The problem with these polls is we don’t know how many illegal aliens expecting handouts were involved in the polls. Of course they support socialism!
This disaster was caused by CRA/Fannie/Freddie “give them po folks a big mortgage they will never be able to repay” socialsm! And cronyism fraud with money from fannie & freddie to Dems.
It is being made worse by socialism. the economy was also hurt by $4.00 a gallon gas by liberals not allowing domestic exploration!

What can we expect? After decades of public schools indoctrinating millions of students to think that collectivism is good, capitalism is bad, Socialism is good, market economy bad, Government is your friend and your god vs. be responsible...
WE have allowed this to happen. Now what do we do about it? Or is it too late?
OR - is this article nothing but further propaganda to try to PUSH this on the American people. Hmmmm....
Those that think they support socialism probably have no idea what it really entails, and wouldn’t like living with it once it was fully realized.
IMHO.
After spending 12 years in our socialist promoting educational system most of todays voters believe that socialism it the wave of the future. Only getting one side of the story, what else can the believe?
And when we say the public school system is run by leftists who indoctrinate our children, they call us “alarmists.”
We are the United States of America—the freest country in the history of civilization. So if this poll isn’t cause for alarm, I don’t know what should be.
Just one more reason I’m homeschooling.
It’s not just the government run education system although that is the biggest part. Lack of respect for elders is is at fault too. The older generation did not mentor proper values to the younger generation. Now its “cool” to be disrespectful to elders. Along with that then goes the idea of Capitalism, cause “that’s what those ol’ fuddy-duddies believe”. The 20th century manufactured term called “teenage rebellion” was firmly planted and now we are reaping the results - selfish skulls of mush.
Bingo. Not just a government education. I doubt many of the people polled bother to pick up a financial news publication. They’re “educated” instead by the insightful economists of USA Today, network news, CNN, etc. Not that the all the financial publications know what they’re talking about either. Indoctrination is easy though when the answers are so deceptively easy. Hard to say if people will ever come to understand what will happen as a result of a move towards socialism.
