Mike Kucharek, a spokesman for North American Aerospace Defense Command, is being reported in an article on Foxnews.com that very shortly after American F-16s started following the stolen plane, they knew they wouldn't shoot it down. Why?

He’s originaLLY from Turkey of all places. A crazed Muslim in a cockpit, and they decided to not shoot him down. Insanity.
What harm can a Cessna 172, being trailed by F16’s, do?
At the very least I don’t think it’s very wise for a NORAD spokesman to state that the interceptors had no intention of shooting down the stolen airplane. It sounds weak and unserious about defense.
Yeah, I’m with Tall Horse...how did they know what the heck was in the plane with him? Somebody here on Freep had a video posted a few days ago about some Muslims talking about sneaking across the Mexican border and causing the death of thousands. Hey, why couldn’t they use a little stolen plane like this Turk/Canadian did?
Obviously you did not read the article.
> How did Mr. Kucharek know that Yavuz Berke wouldn’t toss something out of the window of that stolen plane? He was right over the bread basket of this country. A little something in powder form would have wiped out a goodly chunk of livestock and people. How did they KNOW he didn’t have that capability?
How can they be so sure that he didn’t? Foot-and-Mouth Disease is notoriously easy to transmit to any hoofed cattle, it is highly contagious and could do deep, long-lasting harm to America’s livestock industries. Just ask Britain.
Bingo!
Given that they were ordered to not shoot it down, I suppose a lot of damage. The F16’s wouuld just be forced to watch.
It can cause certain trigger-happy FReepers to injure themselves through excessive conniptions. Is that not enough reason to blow the plane out of the sky?
Well..that’s an remarkable answer.
And if he’d really wanted to go out in a blase of glory, he could have crashed into an elementary school while the F16s were picking their noses.
Well .. it's remarkable that some FReepers are unable to consider the fact that a Cessna 172 being trailed by F-16s can still be shot down if circumstances demand it, even if the original intent was not to do so.
The message the terrorists will take away from this is that the plane was quickly spotted, intercepted, and trailed. Even if certain FReepers cannot connect the dots, I'm sure the terrorists can and will: this is a non-starter as a means for serious terror attacks.
“....they knew they wouldn’t shoot it down. Why?....”
Answer: The Pilots were:
1. Afraid of law suits.
2. Afraid of being called a racist or bigot.
3. Trained not to do any independent thinking by PC superiors.
4. Afraid of being arrested for shooting a potential “innocent” terrorist.
5. Afraid of ruining their military career if injury or death occured on the ground from falling debris or bullets.
6. Simply following their training in today’s “touchy-feely” warm and fuzzy, diversity and multicultural training and PC training.
Gee! They should have made the pilot go to the ground and then give him group hugs from all of the chase plane pilots.
The fact is, no one will take any action due to the fear of what might happen to them. From the pilots to the highest level possible. The intruder should have been blasted out of the air as soon as he crossed the US border.
That isn't exactly what he said. You might have missed the point where he said that they...
"...learned pretty early on he didn't have hostile intent."
How they learned that, isn't something they will tell us, I'm sure. But once they knew that, they complied with the appropriate Rules of Engagement.
Shooting the plane down AFTER a vial or two goes out the window is a little late..huh?
lets see a cessna 172 with say 100 lbs of improvised explosives or even stolen industrial explosives flown into a shopping mall or school won’t do much damage . Hell you don’t even need the explosives just several 5 gallon cans of gasoline & full fuel tanks . to give you a serious nightmare.
Well to be honest I didn't until you mentioned it : )
Here is the money quote "How did Mr. Kucharek know that Yavuz Berke wouldn't toss something out of the window of that stolen plane? He was right over the bread basket of this country. A little something in powder form would have wiped out a goodly chunk of livestock and people. How did they KNOW he didn't have that capability?"
Hmm because it doesn't exist? What little bit of something thrown out over vacant farmland could wipe out a chunk of livestock and people? I don't think I will hold my breath waiting for an answer. Ebola? Anthrax? Ricin? I don't think so. It is hard to think of a worse delivery method.
