Interesting question:
What if the crew has a pirate as a hostage, and
A pirate still has crew members as hostages?
How far would YOU go with your pirate hostage?
I know that I would stop at nothing to get the crew members released.

figure an average 20-25 mph depending on sea state. Trust me, a DDG won’t be worrying about some scurvy POS Somali pirates. The USN knows how to deal with pirates.

"It's reported that one pirate is on board under crew control ...Doesn't the captain of a ship usually carry a sidearm?
It could accidentally fire while pointed at an on board Somalian pirate scum, couldn't it?

Look for the pirates who were thrown over board to sue. Im sure Mr. Obama will issue an apology to them for good measure. One would hope they were read their Miranda rights while on their way down.

I am firmly of the view that denying sailors the natural right of self-defense is as evil as denying it to Joe Sixpack ;only criminals demand everyone else be defenseless.
I remember when ships had arms lockers , and when electric power plants did too.

Per White House press secretary Robert Gibbs in a statement: “The White House is closely monitoring the apparent hijacking of the U.S.-flagged ship in the Indian Ocean and assessing a course of action to resolve this situation. Our top priority is the personal safety of the crew members on board.”

All the crew members are trained in security detail in how to deal with piracy, Maersk CEO John Reinhart told reporters. As merchant vessels we do not carry arms. We have ways to push back
Hmmmmmm. Seems like it worked!

I know I'm going to hell for this, but my first thought was: "This could be Obama's hostage crisis that undermines the rest of his term".
I'm glad these guys repelled the pirates, but I can't help but think that something like this is going to happen, especially after Obama's recent trip to grovel at the feet of the rest of the world.

Fire extinguishers, tools, monkeyfist lines (its a knot at the end of a line to make a weight for throwing) pieces of chain, heck since I used to be a chief engineer I could literally make a weapon in minutes.
