Somali pirates seize cargo ship, 21 U.S. sailors

NAIROBI, Kenya - Somali pirates on Wednesday hijacked a cargo ship with 21 American crew members aboard, a diplomat and U.S. Navy officials said.

The Kenya-based diplomat identified the vessel as the 17,000-ton Maersk Alabama. The diplomat spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to the media.

A spokeswoman for the U.S. Fifth Fleet confirmed that a Danish-owned, U.S.-operated container ship carrying 21 Americans "came under attack" about 240 nautical miles southeast of Eyl, a town in the northern Puntland region of Somalia.

Maersk Line is one of the U.S. Department of Defense's primary shipping contractors, according to GlobalSecurity.org. The Web site said the firm "manages a fleet of nearly 50 ships in commercial and government service, including vessels requiring Top Secret security clearances."

U.S. Navy spokesman Lt. Nathan Christensen said the vessel was not working under a Pentagon contract when hijacked.

Exactly. He's not only been radiating weakness...he's been blaming us for these folks problems.

It is Carter all over again...but much worse I am afraid.

As one poster already pointed out...

“Perdicaris alive or Raisuli dead.”

By whatever means necessary.

Yes, and he needs to travel there on a merchant ship.

Hah, this comedic incident has all the earmarks of a Gilbert and Sullivan operetta, "The Pirates of Appeazance".

That might be the only way anyone gets there anymore. Arriving in Somalia is the easy part of the trip...

From the Halls of Montezuma to the shores of Tripoli
We fight our country's battles in the air, on land AND SEA
First to fight for right and freedom and to keep our honor clean
We are proud to claim the title of United States Marine

Our flag's unfurled to every breeze from dawn to setting sun
WE HAVE FOUGHT IN EV'RY CLIME AND PLACE WHERE WE COULD TAKE A GUN
In the snow of far-off northern lands and in SUNNY TROPIC SCENES
You will find us always on the job -- the United States Marines

(......and Army, Navy, Coast Guard, too!).

Obama has NO intention to "keep our honor clean". Not even our collective door mat.

Yes it is. But the 21 US merchantmen is not a small matter...at least it should not be.

As one poster pointed out...

“Perdicaris alive or Raisuli dead.”

In this case, “All 21 US sailors alive or every Somali pirate and their vessels dead.”

Well then, more rubble will not cause any concern.

Battleships are great at creating land-based rubble!

“Nobody is running Somalia. It’s a nation of bandits, pirates and terrorists.”

OK, just nuke the whole thing. Problem solved.

These terrorists around the world, and those in the countries that allow them to operate, need to have the holy crap scared out of them.

Make an example of some pissy lil country/area that claims they can't stop it, or nobody is in charge.

Then send every UN rep a copy of the film footage with a clear warning...We refuse to piss around with terrorists and those that enable them. If you get the call to correct the problem, you better drop everything and scramble a$$ to correct it yourself. You will only get that call once!

I'm sure our Changer-In-Chief will rise to the occasion.

He will send Hillary to the UN to present a "firm" letter. If that doesn't work, a demand for a "stern" Resolution might be in order. If for some reason, that falls short, he will demand "unconditional" negotiations.

Don't worry. He's on the job and up to the task!

He’ll find a way to blame us mean, arrogant Americans for the entire situation, apologize for us all, and ask the nice, but oppressed Somali pirates if they wont please give us our ship and merchantmen back.

Everything within 50 miles of their coastline would be ashes and rubble.
