STOCKTON - A retired truck driver and Vietnam War veteran said Monday that he is forming an armed militia - mostly men with rifles and armbands, four to a car - to patrol Stockton this summer, when at least 43 police officers are to be laid off.

From what I hear getting a permit for concealed carry in MA depends completely on where you live. Some places, e.g., City of Boston, it is just about impossible to get concealed carry.

This is true. I am fortunate to live in a rural town well outside of Boston. Our PD are good people and are supportive of citizens' rights. My wife and I both got unrestricted LTCs with no problem.

And plant drugs and guns on innocent people! Don’t forget that vital law enforcement skill!

You’re exactly right.

(It’s sad to see our republic fall to the despotism of the national government.)

"Good for them. They are taking this straight from the Constitution."

Does Sweden follow the US constitution's 2nd amendment too?

You’re giving too much credit to illegals. The south and east of Stockton has always been a pit in my memory.

You couldn’t get me in a car full of armed men cruising the ‘hood. They are sitting ducks for any “sniper” behind a fence.

It takes about 5 officers to fill a 22/7 patrol car. That’s 1 per car per shift, vacation, days off, sick time, etc.

If they lay off 43, they’ll have about 8 fewer cars on the street at any given time or 4 if the officers double up.

That’s a lot in a crime ridden town like Stockton.

Oh come on! That is very dismissive. Law enforcement has become far more technically demanding in recent times...

they also need to know how to cut the wires on video surveillance systems.

Many moons ago I was a volunteer deputy sheriff in a tiny Michigan township.

The regular part-time deputy sheriff had to swear you in every time you were needed to help out, and there was no pay.

They ended the program shortly after I signed up.

Mostly it was breaking up major fights at the local saloon, or helping out at traffic accidents.

It wouldn't bother me except for the magnetic sign on the outside of the car. I would rather go undercover so as not to draw unwanted attention.

Lots of towns and even cities and county sheriff's departments have programs like that still in place.

And shoot handcuffed, immobilized kids in the back of the head. That’s a big part of protectin’ and servin’.

NYC laid off 6,000 cops (@20%) in the mid seventies. In some pcts there were as few as two radio cars on the street per tour. That's four cops covering as many as 200,000 residents. Everybody carried something.

Nothins says it can't happen again.

I know they do. The program ended when the township didn't want to pay the part-time deputy sheriff anymore. It had nothing to do with the volunteers. There was just nobody to swear them in.
