HANOI (AFP) Vietnam and the United States must take the "next step" in their relationship, beyond the normalisation that followed years of war, Senator John McCain said during a visit Tuesday.
McCain, who lost his bid for the White House to Democrat Barack Obama in November, called for "a modernisation of our ties commensurate with Vietnam's rising status in the region and in the world."
In a speech applauded by students at the Diplomatic Academy of Vietnam, McCain, 72, said the two countries should have closer economic and military ties.

How is this different from Cuba? And unlike Cuba we lost more than 70 thousand Americans in fighting the Communists in Vietnam. McCain is nuts.

John McCain is a mental case. This nutjob is totally devoid of any redeeming values whatsoever. He makes a perfect compliment to the other idiot in Washington, Hussein Obama.

But rewarding an enemy with economic and military ties, we tried to fight with ten thousands of KIA?

Military ties with a communist dictatorship? What the hell! Why not? We’re screwing so many things up, let’s do that, too. Let’s sell them some of our latest technology and weapons systems. They can use that to keep any unruly citizens in check.
McCain, you’re off the island, too!
You would have been a better VP than Biden.

Military ties??? F#@%& you, Juan I've got no problem with it...the Vietnamese, we discovered much to our dismay, are well-trained, dedicated, disciplined, and make pretty damn good soldiers. They'd be a buttress against the Chicoms ( with whom there is little love exchanged ) and an ally against be little Kim Il's designs on the greater region. Besides, I miss whatever remains of China Beach. John McCain, he number one; Barack Obama, he number 10! To think otherwise one hase to be "beau coup dinky dow" from too much nook maum and boom-boom girls! Cha-bah.

Me thinks McCain (with his big ego) is STILL thinking of running for POTUS next time, and while McCain can’t shadow Obama on his foreign blame-America excursion, McCain is trying to make international news for himself.
Sorry, McPain, you burnt us once again, but that was the last time.

The age-old animosity between the Chinese and the Vietnamese.....
I wonder it can be exploited as a buffer against Chinese hegemony in the region?
