PEORIA Caterpillar Inc.s woes have reached the companys foundry in Mapleton, where nearly 200 employees most of them production workers will be laid off at end of the week.
The company began informing the employees at the start of third shift Sunday night that the layoffs would be indefinite and begin Monday, April 13, said Rick Doty, president of United Auto Workers Local 974, which represents Caterpillar hourly workers in the Peoria area.
Doty said these will be the first layoffs at Mapleton for Caterpillars own employees since the company began cutbacks last fall. Some contract workers who were assigned to the foundry were released earlier.
Doty said the UAW was told 175 of its members would be affected by the layoff. A notice from the company said approximately 200 total would be affected, including salaried personnel.

Thank God the Liar passed the porkulus bill!
Caterpillar issued layoff notices to a TON of people in Georgia last week.
Not sure of the exact numbers, but their plant is near me and they got wacked.
My best friend’s husband just lost his very successful business of 30 years. Gone, capoot. He can’t even sell his equipment to get out from under it.
This is quite frightening.
Sure is...we are probably already in double-digit unemployment nationwide. With the lag in reporting, people don’t realize how bad things really are.
When Obama said “shovel ready projects” I guess he wasn’t kidding ... he expects us to all use shovels and the heck with heavy equipment.
A FOUNDRY in America? Filthy, soot-spewing foundry? I thought they had all been shut down by EPA and moved offshore. How did this one slip by the regulators?
