Looks like there’s potential for significant damage close to the epicenter.

Rome, ITALY (BNO NEWS) — A major earthquake struck central Italy on Monday morning, officials tell BNO News.

The quake, which had a preliminary magnitude of 5.7 to 6.7, hit about 95 km northeast of Rome, according to several earthquake centers. A spokeswoman for the United States Geological Survey told BNO News that the earthquake had a preliminary magnitude of 6.3, while the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre reported a 5.7 magnitude, with RAI News putting the magnitude at 5.8. A tsunami warning center earlier reported that the quake had a magnitude of 6.7.

There was no immediate word on casualties but residents in Rome were awaken by the earthquake, which struck at 3.33 a.m. local time. The earthquake had a depth of only a few kilometers, which means the earthquake was much more powerful. RAI News reported that there was chaos and a number of evacuations near the epicenter.

Earthquakes can be particularly dangerous in parts of Italy where centuries-old buildings are left in disrepair. An official with the USGS told Sky News that residents should prepare for aftershocks, which can be near the size of the original quake.

The quake follows a light earthquake earlier today, which struck several hours earlier.

That would be my guess, too.

God have mercy.

I don’t know if I’m imagining this or not . . .

SEEMS LIKE

I have a faint memory of some prophecy about a major quake in Italy signaling some other soon-to-come traumas.

I hope I’m wrong.

Anyone recall such?

I don’t consider Reuters a reputable source either. However, I have also seen these “rumor” threads that have no merit.

and yeah, after the day i have had, i /s would have been helpful. LOL.

I have a vague memory of a certain volcano erupting being a sign of something awful to come, but can’t remember which volcano. I think it was one in Italy that hadn’t erupted in a long time.

There’s really been an unusual lack of strong quakes in Italy for many years.

A quake of this magnitude can indeed do a lot of damage. It was right under the city of L’Aquila, population 68,000.

This isn’t anywhere near the active volcanoes of Italy.

yeah. And it was shallow. I grew up in Earthquake country, right on the San Andreas fault (500 yards from my house), with several cross faults nearby. The shallow ones are always felt more. I quit feeling them until they reached about a 4.3 and a 6.3 is a good size quake.

Also, to my knowledge, most of their buildings are not seismically retrofitted so that would be a concern.

This quake had a foreshock, and it’s conceivable that the 6.3 is a foreshock to another larger or similar quake.

I wonder if the leaning tower of Pisa came down. It’s up north of Rome.

was responding to Quix, Strategerist, and I think it was an Edgar Cayce prophecy.

I do not necessarily believe Cayce, by the way, but am one of those curious people who read anything and everything, then can never remember where I read something

Glancing at it’s Wikipedia entry, it seems L’Aquila has been regularly devastated by earthquakes.

This is going to be a pretty bad one.

I faintly recall something like that, too.

I know there was something about Vesuvius.

But that’s been going off and on for a while.

I don’t recall what other volcano was mentioned in that light.

I think there was another one . . . not in the USA.
