Deadly ambush claims the lives of 3 city police officers
Pittsburgh Post-Gazette ^ | April 5 | Michael A. Fuoco

...Another friend, Aaron Vire, 23, said Mr. Poplawski strongly opposed Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama's candidacy.

He'd had "very spirited debates" with Mr. Vire, who is black and an Obama supporter.

"He wasn't a racist. He was a cool person. He thought he was losing some of his rights," said Mr. Vire. He said he knew Mr. Poplawski owned an AK-47 assault-type rifle, a .357 Magnum revolver, a .380-caliber handgun and a .45-caliber handgun.

His one friend said something about concern about "Zionist" this or that, and a black friend said he wasn't a racist. The media, though, has said he shares view coomon to conservatives. SOMEHOW< the belief that Dems wants to take guns does not seem far-fetched to me. The ones I've heard going off on "Zionists" the last few years have been lefties. Far-right does it too, but it is not the same as saying coservtaism=anti-zionism.

You just posted what I was going to say. He had issues with “Zionist” control. This guy apparently had the ideology of a crazy person; in other words, it makes no sense.

Actually, we have one white friend talking about Zionists and one black friend saying he was against Obama but not racist. Very bizarre. I have know people though that don’t hate blacks but hate Jews... they were on the left though. SOrt of like Chomsky types. They also didn’t like police. People on the fringe ften don’t like authority, o matter the political persuasion. If this case is used to bash conservatism, it would be a grave injustice.

""We woke up at a quarter after seven and all I heard was 'boom, boom, boom!'" said Scott Bisceglia, 40, who lives a block away at Antoinette and Oglethorpe streets. "It was a war zone."

People who describe scenes as being "like a war zone" have likely never seen a "war zone". Since I'm being nit-picky:

"He said he knew Mr. Poplawski owned an AK-47 assault-type rifle..."

Mr. Poplawski probably didn't own an AK-47, I'm sure it was more like an MAK-90 or a MAADI. If he did own an actual AK-47, it wouldn't be an "assault-style rifle", it would be an actual assault rifle.

I don't know why I still get fired up over these things. It's not like the media know or care Thing 1 about the truth when it comes to firearms.

Scouts Out! Cavalry Ho!

Good points; particularly your point about people being prejudiced against a particular group only.

I don’t care if his name was Richard or Mohammed, if he guns down three law enforcement officers, he is a terrorist, an American Terrorist.

The most interesting thing is how the media treats two obviously disturbed (and in one case clearly evil) individuals. Since Mr. Poplawski could be tagged with the "conservative" label, or at least the "opposed to Obama" label, there is all kinds of discussion about his ownership of firearms, his concern about the new administration's likelihood to change gun laws, the possibility that he is a racist, etc. In the press reports the discussion of his beliefs implies that they are related to his actions, and perhaps even causal in some way.

By contrast, I haven't seen the same press organizations looking into the political beliefs of Mr. Mixon, who just last month murdered 4 police officers in Oakland California. I haven't seen any speculation that he was a racist, or any discussion of his political beliefs, or his view on gun control laws. Of course it is highly likely that he supported President Obama. Moreover, the dozens of people who marched in support/sympathy for Mixon are almost certainly liberal Democratic voters. Has anybody seen a major media news report implying that their point of view, and support for a killer of police officers is somehow associated with the general philosophy of liberal voters?

Needless to say you won't see dozens of conservatives marching in Pittsburg in support of Mr. Poplawski. Instead the conservatives will be honoring the sacrifice of the Pittsburg police officers, helping their families and friends deal with the loss of their loved ones, and trying to figure out how to prevent similar tragedies in the future.

And as usual, the media will continue trying to paint conservatives in a bad light.

He was a frequent poster on StormFront, a neoNazi / white supremacist site. FWIW.

A radio talk show host (forget which one) conjectured that the media is quietly compiling the recent spate of cop killings, and in a few weeks we will see a massive media push to examine guns in society and the prospect of banning them, which will remarkably coincide with introduced legislation. So watch for the upcoming propaganda blitz.

That would explain the rabid “anti Zionist” comment that one of his friends mentioned. Of course that tidbit won't make the drive by media rounds. They need to paint conservatives and in particular gun owners as wacko’s. In reality, drug and alcohol abuse probably fueled the incident. Since he survived, he’ll probably be doing interviews in a week or so.

Mixon was clearly infused with evil. His history of violent crime to me shows that unequivocally.

Poplawski, from what little of his prior history has been reported, almost seems to be an example of some kind of mental illness or derangement. There may be some evil mixed in of course.

Both of Mixon and Poplawski are despicable.

My main point was about how differently the media has chosen to treat them. None of the media reporters has tried to tie Mixon to liberal political thought, even though it is pretty clear that he was sane and evil. However the media reporters are trying to tie Poplawski to conservative political thought even though what has been reported to date suggests he may well be crazy.

You hit the nail on the head my friend. Completely! The truth is that when you take conservatives as a whole and liberals as a whole, I bet there are far less crimes committed by conservatives, just like we also give way more money to charity. We are more likely to attend church and have morals that would prohibit us from doing evil. It doesn’t mean we aren’t sinners, just that as a whole, I bet there’s big differences.

Words have meaning and by trivializing, or bending, the true meaning, you do a serious injustice; just as those who ascribe words like Nazi to Bush.

Actually, the perp did have the ideology of a crazy person. On an earlier thread, someone mentioned that the perp posted to, I can't think of the exact name of the site - it's a neo-Nazi site called "Stormfart" or something like that. The poster also quoted one of his friends on this "Stormfart" site, the quote was part of a rambling manifesto against the "Zionists" and against the races mingling, etc. In other words, standard neo-Nazi white trash fare. So the perp was most certainly a neo-Nazi creep.

He was also dishonorably discharged from the Marines - he did not even make it through boot camp. He assaulted his drill sargeant. So he was a Nazi, and a violent criminal (even before the killings) who should not have had guns in the first place. But of course the media is reporting he was a conservative and no doubt they will portray him as a typical veteran, too.

Yes, words do have meaning and the action of this POS Terrorist in Pittsburgh has struck terror in the hearts and minds of every Law Enforcement office in this country as well as the hearts and minds of their wives and children. Each now know that their next shift could be their last if some crackpot who is pissed off at the current political/economic situation decides to take aim upon them.

BTW-Those who equate Bush or Obama to a Nazi are morally and intellectually corrupt.

My wife has relatives that had serial numbers tattooed on their arms and others who never left the camps. I really do not think that an American President will ever do such a thing.

Well, while I can agree with your strong feelings about this person being a scourge, I still prefer to use the word terrorist to define individuals such as suicide bombers.

I heard that Obama’s administration is changing the name of the “War on Terror” to some lame thing and also that they are now using the term “man caused disaster” in lieu of terrorist acts like what happened in Mumbai.

This is WHY I refuse to use the term in the manner you did. He was a lone sociopath out to kill some cops. It is NOT the same.

Also, while I am truly sorry your own beloved family members suffered in the Shoah, I still will not equate this man with terrorists such as Al Quaeda, Timothy McVeigh, or Ted Kazinsky. There IS a difference and I’m sorry the difference is lost on you.

But... please no more quibbling. We disagree, that is all. It happens.

Shalom.
