Gingrich: I would've disabled missile
politico.com ^ | April 5, 2009 | Mike Allen

Posted on 04/05/2009 9:04:31 AM PDT by kellynla

Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich told “Fox News Sunday” that he would have disabled the long-range missile before North Korea launched it, saying too many people “do not appreciate the scale of the threat that is evolving on the planet.”

“One morning, just like 9/11, there’s going to be a disaster,” Gingrich said. “I have yet to see the United Nations do anything effective with either Iran or North Korea.”

Reacting to President Barack Obama’s speech in Prague, Gingrich called the plan for a Global Summit on Nuclear Security a “wonderful fantasy idea,” saying Russia and other nations can’t be trusted.

“What are they going to promise, and why would we believe them?” Gingrich said. “It’s very dangerous to have a fantasy foreign policy, and it can get you in enormous trouble.”

Host Chris Wallace asked Gingrich: “So you’re saying that President Gingrich would have taken out that” missile?

Gingrich replied: “There are three or four techniques that could have been used, from unconventional forces to standoff capabilities, to say: ‘We’re not going to tolerate a North Korean missile launch, period.’ I mean, the world’s either got to decide that North Korea is utterly dangerous … I’d recommend, look at electromagnetic pulse, which changes every … equation about how risky these weapons are.”

South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford, appearing with Gingrich, said: “In the countryside of South Carolina, at some point, you’ve got to back up words with action. … There have been a long series of … intentional steps on North Korea’s part, and little in the way of actions from the standpoint of either America or the international community.”

I can’t wait to see Newt run for President in 2010.

He is the best true conservative of any conviction and national standing, and has been so unequivocally for 30+ years.

It’s about time to rally around a real conservative and demonstrated patriot instead of these affected GOP media boys and demagogues. I am sick to death of all of them.

Newt is imperfect, but he’s the best conservative out there.

And he’s a fighter who never gives up.

Yeah, I like Newt.

What’s this supposed to mean other than,

It means he thinks you are dumb enough to believe it.

Judging not just from this interview alone but from his recent appearances and his website and his attempts to identify himself with Ronald Reagan through the film he produced, I conclude that Newt is a runnin'

I for one welcome the development. He will serve his own purposes, of course, but he will also serve our purposes. He will articulate conservative issues as no one else today has demonstrated he can and he will get a hearing that no one else can get.

Newt wouldn't have done anything. Policing NK is up to China. It's intuitively obvious to even the casual observer. Do you really think China would ALLOW us to disable an NK missle? We are in China's hip pocket because they are our LENDER. We are in Saudi Arabia's hip pocket because they are a fuel supplier.

If you refuse to live within your means and refuse to make your own fuel, you are beholden to your suppliers. Newt can talk tough, but there's nothing he could do without paying off the debt and finding another source of energy first.

I agree. I fear for out country's survival if Obama gets a second term.

King Obama will get a second term and beyond. My prediction. Term limits for President will be overthrown by our communist elect King Obama in an illegal passage of legislation by the Senate and House. The Supreme Court will just shut up.

We have the capability to shoot it down. We should have. It entered Japanese airspace flying right over the country.

Earlier this month, the top U.S. commander in the Pacific, Adm. Timothy Keating, told the Senate that the U.S. has the capability of shooting down any missile from North Korea and would be "prepared to respond" in the event of a missile launch.

Newt made a serious mistake supporting the globull warming crowd. I could not vote for him for this reason. I fear he might divide the GOP again and then take a third party approach..leaving us with a Rino candidate again.
We need NEW CONSERVATIVE leadership in the GOP..

well, we *might* have the capability. Right now we claim to have that capability, even though a lot of our public tests of anti-missile systems have failed. We more likely have a ~50% chance or something of shooting down a missile in mid-flight in a real-world scenario. If we had of used it and it failed (since there is definitely a non-zero chance of that happening), it would have been far more damaging to the US than to letting them go ahead with a test that would probably fail.

Also, as someone pointed out, NK is more China’s problem than ours.

Newt is just acting “tough” since he can say whatever he wants without the consequences. I’m sure he would have magically made the missile disappear and he’d have kim jong il groveling at his feet, but in reality, he would have stood there and watched like just happened. Hell, NK tested a nuke while bush was in office, and he wasn’t exactly afraid to use force!

Need to repeal the 22nd amendment 1st with another ammendment. Not going to get through enough states legislatures by a LOT. (or by states conventions)

The US has a modified 747 with a laser to take care of situations such as this...don’t know if it’s ready yet.

Oh wait, Mr. “O” is in charge.....nevermind.

Why try to disable it?

North-Korean missiles come pre-disabled, just like their “less than one kiloton” nuke test.

IMO the NKs have got nothing that’s strategically important, unless you count their cool all-girl marching bands.

Then our military leaders are lying to us. And if we missed, we need not disclose it, just deny we were trying to shoot it down.

Also, as someone pointed out, NK is more China’s problem than ours.

BS. It is a big problem for us. Japan is a major ally. We have provided the nuclear umbrella for Japan and external defense through a mutual defense agreement. Japan may feel the need to acquire its own nuclear weapons and missile shield. And then there are the other countries in the region that may feel threatened, including South Korea where we have 30,000 tripwire troops.

And then there is the added problem of North Korea supplying Iran and other rogue nations with this technoloy. The nuclear plant in Syria that was taken out by Israel was supplied by North Korea.

Newt criticized Bush for not making a stronger show of force as did John Bolton. I would still have favored shooting the missile down because it flew over Japan. What would recommend if Cuba had set up preparations to send a missile over Florida? The more you appease, the greater the problem will become--and the consequences in trying to solve it.

I agree with you! At one time I thought he was a great debater and a Reagan Conservative. He has shown weakness in the past few years, cozying up to the Democrats and even folding to the attack from the eavesdropping Florida couple who listen in on his cell call. Remember in reference to a gag order which ordered Newt not to communicate with his lawyer concerning fees from speeches or fees from a book. I can't remember the specifics because I thought it was so ridiculous that the Government prosecutor was going after Newt for such a small blip on the screen compared to what the Clinton's were getting away with.

I've lost admiration for the man. He completely folded when the Florida couple eavesdropped on his cell conversation and recorded it on top of listening to it. They purposefully sat in a parking lot and recorded the conversation and got away with only a slap on the hand. Newt didn't sue them or pursue any kind of action against them. Plus he obviously was running around with his now new wife at the time Clinton was running around and that also diminished my respect for him also. He is a great speaker but he isn't strong enough to bring Obama down.
