Anti-Obama talk worries some on right By: Michael Calderone April 4, 2009 06:45 AM EST

While Washington policy makers coped with 21st century political problems this week, some conservative talkers were dredging up 20th-century "-isms."

Glenn Beck, who graced the cover of The New York Times on Monday, teased Friday’s episode of his increasingly popular new Fox News show with images of Stalin, Lenin and Hitler, while telling audiences on Wednesday’s show that he was wrong to have said the Obama administration is leading America to socialism — it’s actually fascism.

“They’re marching us towards 1984,” Beck said. "Big Brother, he’s watching.”

Although Beck’s brand of libertarian conservatism has generated a strong following, some members of the right-leaning commentariat openly doubt whether such heated rhetoric is helpful to the Republican Party or the conservative movement at large.

Conservative author David Horowitz, himself no stranger to controversy or heated accusations, warns that the criticism of Obama among some conservatives has approached “over-the-top hysteria." It’s not just Stalin comparisons, Horowitz wrote this past week on FrontPageMag.com — one contributor likened the president to David Koresh, Charles Manson and Saddam Hussein.

Borrowing from conservative writer Charles Krauthammer — who in 2003 coined the term “Bush derangement syndrome” to describe some Bush haters — Horowitz dubbed the piece, “Obama Derangement Syndrome.”

“Conservatives, please,” Horowtiz said. “Let's not duplicate the manias of the left as we figure out how to deal with Mr. Obama. He is not exactly the anti-Christ, although a disturbing number of people on the right are convinced he is.”

He's struck me as a Jim Jones from day one.

Too bad.

Perhaps David will wake up when Obama’s ‘Sharia Lawyer’ at the state department brings Sharia Law to America!

Horowitz again? You’re not conservative when you are the ‘go to guy’ when the media wants a ‘conservative’ to bash conservatives.

So this week the target is Beck. Interesting. It means they now take him seriously. His ratings will now surpass BOR.

8 years of comparing Bush to Hitler didn’t seem to hurt the dims too much. I say we give the Stalin thing a try.

The TRUTH will set us free, not a pseudo conservative back pedaling base that is afraid to call a spade a spade.

What is simplified explains itself, when politics get micromanaged they fail. Basic laws and liberties are easily understood and believed in. America may be embracing a third party soon because left and right have no direction they can support.

The more you see, the more you realize conservatives need a new party.

No, trying to organize a new party would result in a third party where nothing can be accomplished. Remember, Perot in '92 got BJ elected. It would be easier and quicker to kick the RINOs out of the GOP and get some real conservatives in office.

This is idiotic Horowitz. It's not like we're talking about Obama in bumper sticker language like the Bush hating libs did. There's real substance to what we're talking about. I thought you were smarter than that Horowitz!

RATS and liberals always scorn the truth.

They will not succeed in shaming Americans to accept socialism being shoved down their throats by a community organizer!

The days of the Silent Majority are over.

I’m surprised David Horowitz would take this stance. He obviously knows commies and the insidious tactics of the left
better than anyone.

Conservatives (and principled libertarians please, we’re on the same side) don’t need a new party.

We need to drive out and marginalize the spineless marshmallows, currently NOT leading this one!!

Be gone, wimps!

Horowitz is being reasonable. Name calling just makes those that LOVE Obama (which is the majority)change the channel. It's a substitute for an argument, the argument is why what he is doing is wrong. Why is it bad? Calling him a communist and radical did not get McCain elected. In fact, those that call Obama names call the Obama lovers names. It might feel good but it is not going to hurt him.

Democrats won BIG because they were over time able to string together a convincing narrative about Bush, not name calling.

I assume you think the present path is OK?

You may have to lose before you can win. Sometimes you have to just strike out to make your own path. Perot did not have a theme, a calling, we can ... First Principles.

I sure as hell don’t think the Republicans are America’s salvation.
