THANK YOU!

I get verrrrrrrrrry tired of the “wide stroke” criticism from FR posters and more times than naught, the criticisms come from those who know very little if anything about Catholicism, Catholics and/or the Catholic Church.

Thanks to the sharp Internet Sleuthing skills of FReepers PAR35 and maryz, we now have contact information for some Notre Dame Trustees. These are the people who ultimately run Notre Dame.

Do not assume they are pro-aborts: very likely some are, and some aren’t. Contact them quite politely and quite persistently, make sure their Catholic consciences begin to torment them. Exhibit intelligence and honor. Say what you truly believe. Sample letter below.

Dear Mr. xxxxxxx,

I am writing to appeal to you as a good man and a Catholic.

As you must know, the Obama Administration has now rescinded conscience protection for pro-life doctors, nurses, and healthcare institutions by eliminating HHS regulations which recognized the right NOT to participate in abortion.

This is a direct threat to every Catholic healthcare provider in this country.

The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops has stated plainly that those who oppose the fundamental norms are "not to be given a platform or honors" by any Catholic institution.

Please take action in order to stop Barack Obama's proposed award of an Honorary Law Degree from Notre Dame. This is a Catholic honor to which Mr. Obama is not entitled.

This award is breaking the hearts and shocking the consciences of literally hundreds of thousands of people, some 230,000 of whom have already signed a petition calling for Notre Dame to dis-invite Mr. Obama. If the award is given as planned, it will be the ruin of the Soul of Notre Dame.

Please do what you can to stop this.

May God bless you.

Sincerely,

[signature]
[city and state]

Thanks for the info! Did anyone see the coverage of Cardinal George on the local Chicago news yesterday? I only caught a portion of it, and it appeared they were showing Cardinal George making a statement about this, something like he was apologizing for his earlier statements against Obama speaking at Notre Dame. Did anyone see the entire report and can clarify Cardinal George’s statement?

He explains that the university must necessarily allow for the open discussion of such issues, since it is "devoted to both faith and reason." Woodward and Jenkins miss a key distinction: There is a big difference between allowing a person to speak at a university and granting him an honorary degree and making him the centerpiece of commencement exercises.

If Fr. Jenkins wanted open discussion, he could have invited That One to participate in a debate, with students being allowed to attend. A Commencement is not for that purpose. Awarding That One an Honorary Degree is just spitting in the face of the Church, and I'm afraid Fr. Jenkins knows that.

I have had the pleasure to work with a number of devout Catholics, many of whom have been contemplating colleges for their children. Trust me, there are no devout Catholics attending Notre Dame. It is, after all, no longer a "Catholic Univserity." It is a "university in the Catholic tradition." The distinction is not trivial. It means they long ago sold out.

It's an apt distinction, one that's by no means confined to some nominally Catholic schools. Protestant colleges here in Minnesota are even more spineless. The ELCA Lutheran schools (St. Olaf, Gustavus, Concordia) are among the "religious" (as opposed to Christian) colleges that would obsequiously welcome and lavish honors upon Obama without a peep of protest.

Don't think she's received Communion since she had those private talks with both Pope B16 and her own SF Archbishop. As I understand it, she is under admonishment not to receive.

Pray for her conversion.

Sorry. You’re absolutely right. My apologies. (It is a bit ugly to do so, isn’t it?)

I sure wish you Catholics well in this venture. I can still hardly believe ND would invite BO but nowadays, little surprises me.

To: Mrs. Don-o; All
At Mrs. Don-o's suggestion, I'm posting the snail-mail letter I will send to Fr. Jenkins on Monday. All comments and suggestions are welcome.

Rev. John Jenkins, CSC
Office of the President
400 Main Building
Notre Dame, IN 46556

Dear Fr. Jenkins,

I am sure you are receiving a great deal of mail on the subject of your invitation to President Obama both to speak and to take an honorary degree.

Speaking as a convert to Catholicism from the Episcopal Church, however, I want to offer you a different perspective.

You indicated in your public statement that you “ invited him because we care so much about those issues, and we hope…for this to be the basis of an engagement with him.” While that well may be your intention, I can tell you from bitter experience that it is not the intention of President Obama or the culture of death for which he speaks.

Episcopalians were similarly lulled by assurances from liberal activists that we “agreed on essentials” and that they merely intended to “open a dialogue.” The swiftness with which they moved from that point to take over the denomination and destroy it was breathtaking. Only a few short decades – the twinkling of an eye as the Church counts time – transformed the Episcopalians from an essentially orthodox group that had opened discussions with Rome for a reunion, to a “church” that wholeheartedly embraces abortion, women’s ordination, the consecration as bishop of a man who deserted his wife and two children to live in homosexual sin, and even denial of Christ’s divinity. And a church that is dwindling to insignificance, losing thousands of members and even whole parishes and dioceses.

According to the new president of a prominent Episcopalian divinity school, who is also a radical lesbian feminist, abortion is a “blessing”. Is this what you want for our Church as well? If you accommodate the culture of death, which has no intention whatsoever of accommodating us, that is what you (and the rest of us) will get.

You are not promoting dialogue or engagement; you are promoting the ongoing assault on Holy Mother Church by appeasing and even honoring her sworn enemies. Either you know this or you do not. If you do not, please consider this a timely warning from one who has already experienced the dreadful consequences of such actions. If you do know what you are doing, may God have mercy on your soul.

In either event, I will pray for you.

Very truly yours,

I apologize for my inaccuracy. What's already happened is the Senate rejected Coburn's proposed conscience amendment to the budget bill on Thursday, April 3.

The HHS "comment" period doesn't end until April 9, at which time the Obama administration's stated intention is to also rescind the HHS conscience regs.

April 9

How appropriate that he would rescind the conscience clause on Holy Thursday.

The day of betrayal.

Vatican unwilling to accept Obama ambassadors? April 03, 2009

An Italian journalist reports that the Vatican has quietly rejected three names put forward by the White House to fill the post of US ambassador to the Vatican. Mary Ann Glendon, the Bush administration ambassador, resigned the post in January when President Obama was inaugurated.

The Vatican has, in the past, established a policy of declining to accept ambassadors who are Catholic but not in good standing with the Church

If I recall correctly Ray Flynn was the ambassador to the Vatican under Clinton. Although a D, he was a strong advocate for life.

Obama may just have to look pretty hard to find someone that meets B16's standard.
