ISLAMABAD, Pakistan — The video shows a young girl held face down as a Taliban commander whips her repeatedly with a leather strap. “Leave me for the moment — you can beat me again later,” she screams, pleading for a reprieve and writhing in pain...

The girl in the video is a 17-year-old resident of Kabal in the restive Swat region in northwestern Pakistan. The images, which have been aired repeatedly by private television news networks in Pakistan, have caused outrage here and set off bitter condemnation by rights activists and politicians. It has also raised questions once again about the government’s decision to enter into a peace deal in February that effectively ceded Swat to the Taliban and allowed them to impose Islamic law...

Relatives of the man involved in the incident told the BBC he had gone to the house of the girl in the village of Kala Kalay to do repairs as an electrician, but militants accused him of having a relationship with her.

They dragged him from the house and flogged him before punishing the girl, his relatives said.

The Taleban made the girl's brother hold her down during the flogging, they said.

After the incident, the Taleban forced the couple to marry and instructed the man not to divorce his wife. His relatives say he has been left mentally scarred...

I didn’t see the main story posted, jut a blog response.

I don’t know what the heck to do - we don’t want to nation build the whole world. We can’t let these people alone because it spills over into civilization and even the “moderates” we pick out in Afghanistan, Pakistan and Iraq let barbaric practices slide by.

I guess we do what we can - speak out about it, send troops when our direct interests are threatened and get Europe to try face up to the situation too...

Saudi Arabia in a lot of ways has been our friend - or at least our non-enemy but they have religious police who will drive girls back into burning buildings for not being dressed properly. And Al Quaida hates the Saudis for being so soft and friendly to the West.

Its is almost not solvable.

what do you do when 21% of the world believes in something that lens itself to such violations of humanity. And it seems to be getting worse rather than better?

Islam can be used like chemotherapy. I recommend we start settling Islamists in cities like San Francisco.

Yeah and you know these moral men wouldn’t take any pleasure from this beating of such young flesh. Look at all the people standing around gawking. These guys don’t appear armed and most certainly are too busy to notice someone overtaking them.
Where are the brave men to stand up against this?

As my dad used to say, “if someone jumps off a bridge, are you going to do the same?”. Just because X% of the world belongs to a cult of hate doesn’t make it a religion, anymore than it makes it right.

And your dad was right of course.

And I didn’t mean that it was right I meant its harder to deal with when its a fifth of humanity.

I would not be surprised if some areas here in the USA were given over to Islamic rule. Jihad compulsory? No big deal. These people are to be tolerated.

Christians suspected of extreme behavior? Squash them.

There are S&M fanataics from San Francisco that might actually want the Taliban to flog them.

Well, now many of us have seen small town behavior where everyone knows everyone’s business and community standards are strong. Now just imagine that based not on love thy neighbor and and “forgive and forget” but on a literal Koran law and its a potential nightmare.

I know I’m in the minority here, but I do think President Bush43 was wrong when he said he wouldn’t talk to our enemies. When you want someone to do something, some talking is needed -even if its just to find their position is immovable and harsher measures are needed.

The problem is American President’s have a tendency to give away too much when they talk and thus you get the impulse that maybe we should just not negotiate at all.

One interesting point from the news commentary in the video - this is apparently a popular tourist area - God know what they do up in the hills where its more isolated.

“forgive and forget” was a carrier for Christianity, but the Koran Law plays for “keeps”.

And to be fair the best we Christians can often do is forgive but not forget.

Here’s an AP version of the video - the Taliban spokesman defends it while the government promising an investigation.
