Ruger's P-Series: what's wrong with Ruger's P-Series semiauto pistols? Not a darn thing, says the author
(Excerpt) Read more at findarticles.com ...
I have wanted to buy one several times because of the price and the fact that it is a perfectly good pistol. Unfortunately it is the only auto pistol I have ever tried in which my finger just could not feel right while trying to fire it either single or DA.
If it feels good to you then there is no reason not to buy it unless it is overpriced and it should not be.
I don’t have the P85 but I do own two other Ruger pistols. Great guns. Solid. Reliable. If it feels good in your hand then go for it.
You might want to look into the Springfield XD’s (my personal favorite) or the ever popular Glocks.
My hand is too small and stocky for quick release and insertion of the mag, but I like the gun.
Yeah my opinion is buy whatever you like now and right away, before the messiah makes it all illegal.

Buy all the ammo you can too, and for heavens sake join the NRA or Gun Owners of America, or both and do it NOW!

The Thompson Pistol, It Has Returned!
New for 2008, the Thompson 1927A-1 Deluxe Pistol TA5:
10.5 Barrel, Lightweight, .45 ACP with 50 round drum.
After a long hiatus and great demand, the Thompson Pistol
has returned to the market!
The Thompson Deluxe Pistol TA5 is lightweight with a
10.5 barrel length and a walnut, horizontal foregrip.
Included with the Thompson TA5 is one of the most famous
accessories, the 50 round Drum magazine.
The authentic Drum is entirely U.S. manufactured to
the specifications that are as close as possible to
the original.
A 30 round stick, 10 round and 100 round Drum magazine
are optional.
A gun grabber would have a fit over the above.
I like my P90. Can’t comment on the P85 though, never held one. I love love love my Sigs. Sigarms.com if you want to check them out.
Go to a range that lets you rent range guns and try it and others out. In my experience Ruger makes an excelent weapon, hardy, with exelent fit and finish.
One last rule that I use with my students is if you pick it up and it feels awkward you will struggle to become proficent with it, on the other hand if it fits it will be easier to master. whatever pistol you get buy lots of ammo and go to the range often.
I have the P89, an updated version of the P85. I have fired thousands of rounds with it, never once having a misfeed. This is a seriously reliable gun.
The major negative is the size of the gun. It is big and heavy.
For the money, you can’t do much better than any Ruger gun. For plinking and home defense, they are excellent.
Indeed, the Springfield XD(M) is a good one, too. Both come in a nice “kit” with all you need:

These are very accurate pistols for para-military designed pieces.
I can’t live without my Sig P-220. You pay for a Sig but the price is well worth it. I’ve owned it 18 years, sent thousands of rounds through it and it hasn’t jammed that I can think of, even with cheap ammo.
I don’t know how to do pictures and I guess no one else on this thread does either.
I had one and it never jammed. Great pistol.
I like that, I like that a lot.
do they have a compact? i like it but it looks a little big for ccw, which is what i am in the market for right now. any suggestions?
been looking at the Cimarron Whitneyville Dragoon myself....though I had entertained yours - lemme know how you like it
I sold it when I bought my Springfield XD-9. Another great, economical handgun.
There's very good and more expensive guns out there, but you could not go wrong with the Ruger or XD. Borrow or rent some different handguns at a range and buy what fits your hand, hits what your shooting at and you can spare the cash for.
