Disgraced former San Francisco Supervisor was sentenced to 64 months in prison today after earlier pleading guilty to federal bribery and corruption charges.

Jew tried to shake down Chinese immigrant owners of tapioca drink shops in the Sunset District for $84,000 in bribes.

The sentence was longer than prosecutors had asked for. Prosecutors had sought a 57-month prison term for Jew, saying he "preyed upon and victimized the very people whom he had proposed to support in his campaign: small business owners in the Sunset District."

He must surrender to authorities and begin his prison sentence by July 1.

Barely two months in office, Jew effectively created permitting problems for a string of eight Quickly tapioca shops that he then offered to fix - at a price, Assistant U.S. Attorney Tracie Brown wrote in court filings.

Jew first brought Quickly to the attention of the city's Planning Department, then directed the department to send formal notices of violation after one of the shops failed to pay him $20,000, prosecutors said. Jew then offered a "group discount" of $80,000 - $10,000 per shop - to remedy Quickly's permitting problems.

He was also accused of accepting $4,000 in cash from the owner of Wonderful Desserts and Cafe in April 2007 in exchange for his support of a new permit for the cafe. The payment was made three days after the City Planning Commission approved the permit, Jew's indictment said.

I'm not saying Jew didn't do anything wrong, but I don't think that's why he's in trouble.

Big Government is cool. If a measly tapioca shop permit will fetch $10,000 just think how much those CO-2 permits will be worth. The Gore-ites will be rolling in dough.

An acquaintance of mine is a contractor who took on a wiring job on a development project in San Francisco several years ago. The inspectors made it pretty plain that his work was not going to pass inspection until he hired union electricians to re-do the work. It cost him all of his $10,000 profit to get past the intrenched powers in the City.

The unions now have no need to worry about him coming into town again. He will never bid on a San Francisco contract again. It's a union town and they all deserve each other there.

How bad do you think that guy got taunted with that name? I mean everything from anti-semitic comments, to the typical mock-sneeze: “ED JEW!” God Bless You!

Yes, he's a Democrat. However, he's actually a former Republican who re-registered as a Dim in order to run for office, as GOP affiliation is incompatible with electoral success in San Francisco. I believe in "do the crime, do the time," so I don't feel sorry for him. Nonetheless, it's too bad that he lied about his residency and tried to shake down those businesses, because he was sort of a right-winger by S.F. standards and was actually the voice of reason during brief tenure on the board.
