[Mad Juan] McCain loses temper with Hispanic immigration activists
Hot Air ^ | 2009-04-03 | Ed Morrissey

When we remind people that elections have consequences, we’re usually talking about the outrage that comes from appointments to the executive and judicial branches. They have other consequences on policy and legislative priorities, as John McCain “forcefully” reminded Hispanic immigration activists at a meeting last month. National Journal reports on the fallout today.

Oh cry me a river McCain. You reached across the “aisle” on immigration, against the very party you claim to represent for the assumed promise of Hispanic voters.

You never learn but your base has. Why else do you think you and the GOP lost?

The RATs will probably sit on this issue until after the 2010 elections. Meanwhile they are stopping any enforcement.

They know it will be a hot button issue, so they might wait until right after 2010 elections, then grant their amnesty, and the 20 million or more illegals granted amnesty by the RATS will tip the 2012 election to Obama.

As far as McDope goes. He will still vote for the amnesty.

This is what I think every election when Republicans get hauled up to the NAACP to be grilled. We are not going to get any amount of votes from these groups by pandering to them. We have certain scruples and we should not compromise them for cheap votes.

I don’t blame McCain a bit for responding, in essence, by telling them (immigration activists) to stuff it and start whining to Barack Obama instead.

Sounds okay to me.

Sí. Uh, I mean yes. I know just what McCain is thinking:

¡No equitativo, mis amigos! ¡No es bueno! I was totally willing to sell the rest of America down the river for your votes and this is how you repay me?

!Siento la decepción!

(Please forgive my lousy Spanish)

That's why it might be a good idea for conservative Republicans to force the immigration issue to the fore, ahead of the 2010 midterms.

"'You people — you people made your choice. You made your choice during the election,’"

Their choice was always preordained, especially the more recent arrivals. It's a pity we had a president and a nominee who were both so self-absorbed and self-deluded that they thought they could buy off all these natural Dem. constituents.

That stupid gambit did tremendous harm to the Republican party, creating serious divisions within the party and offending both the party's base and probably some Hispanics who might have considered the party.

One of the dumbest political gambits ever, and we still have Republicans who have not yet learned that lesson.

And, McCain shows his true colors, just a weasel who'll eventually lash out at any and everyone.

I'm surprised he lashed out at them.

From National Journal:
McCain Rebukes Hispanic Voters

Stung over the voting bloc's 2-to-1 support of Obama in November, the senator says to look to the new president for immigration leadership.
by Kirk Victor
Saturday, April 4, 2009

John McCain sounds angry and frustrated that, despite the risks he took in pushing immigration reform, Hispanic voters flocked to Democrat Barack Obama in last year's presidential contest. McCain's raw emotions burst forth recently as he heatedly told Hispanic business leaders that they should now look to Obama, not him, to take the lead on immigration.

The meeting in the Capitol's Strom Thurmond Room on March 11 was a Republican effort led by Sens. McCain of Arizona, John Thune of South Dakota, and Mel Martinez of Florida to reach out to Hispanics. But two people who attended the session say they were taken aback by McCain's anger.

What began as a collegial airing of views abruptly changed when McCain spoke about immigration ... McCain had displayed his notorious temper.

"He was angry," one source said. "He was over the top. In some cases, he rolled his eyes a lot. There were portions of the meeting where he was just staring at the ceiling, and he wasn't even listening to us. We came out of the meeting really upset."

McCain's message was obvious, the source continued: After bucking his party on immigration, he had no sympathy for Hispanics who are dissatisfied with President Obama's pace on the issue. "He threw out [the words] 'You people -- you people made your choice. You made your choice during the election,' " the source said. "It was almost as if [he was saying] 'You're cut off!' We felt very uncomfortable when we walked away from the meeting because of that."

In 2006 and 2007, McCain was a leader on immigration, but his efforts ran aground largely because his legislation included what many Republicans derisively characterized as "amnesty," ...

Having stuck his neck out in the past, McCain apparently is in no mood...

(snip)
