Congressional plan ups federal pay hikes

WASHINGTON, April 3 (UPI) -- The U.S. Congress is considering a pay raise for federal workers that will cost more than $1 billion over the amount President Obama requested, budgeters say.

The Office of Management and Budget estimates that Congress' removal of language specifying different pay increases for civilian and military employees will cost the government an additional $1.3 billion, USA Today reported Friday.

Obama's budget called for a 2 percent pay raise for non-military federal workers and a 2.9 percent hike for military employees. "It feels like this is not a good time to be taking a pay increase," says Leslie Paige of the watchdog group Citizens Against Government Waste. "Everyone else in the country is taking huge cuts, losing jobs." House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer, D-Md., says there is a case for pay raises.

"Military and civilian personnel ... work side-by-side in carrying out the responsibility of government," Hoyer said.

The taxpayers are getting their pay cut all over the place, but they still have to pony up more to increase the Gov't workers' salaries.

What's wrong with this picture. Plenty.

Yep, there is a lot of sacrifice by those Beltway sandcrabs. They surely deserve the same pay increase as the Military.

Increasing the power of government, while doing everything to destroy private enterprise. That’s the mission of this congress and its marxist leader in the White House.

Most of us agree on the military pay increase as our soldiers, sailors, Marines and air personnel are doing a tough job for us.

As to the civilian employees, Ha! Most already are paid more than similar employees in the private sector. Plus, it is hard to raise pay for any job when the economy is in trouble.

Last time I checked the ‘Government Dependency Index’ (those that are dependent on government vs private sector) was above 50%.

I’m sure service members’ pay won’t increase as a part of this plan.

“Military and civilian personnel ... work side-by-side in carrying out the responsibility of government, that line could mean many things under obama rule.

All the military asks is that our pay is increased with the rate of inflation. Nothing more. Nothing less.

That’s typically 4%. If we’re truly in a “stagflation” state, then we’ll be alright with a smaller bump.

I’m just scared that we’re going to start seeing 8% - 9.5% - 10.4% inflation numbers and military pay will be meandering along with a 2% increase.

Under Clintoon, we were stuck with a cost of living raise set 1% below the rate of inflation. After 8 years of that crap, the difference was huge. Bush did a great job of getting us back on track. I’m really afraid that we’re going to go through the rough times once again.

At least we have the small comfort of knowing that we’re not alone. The rest of the nation will be struggling along with us. If times are bad enough, people will just be grateful to have a job.
