SAN DIEGO -- A South Bay foster mother is accused of stealing more than 11,000 toys from the Toys For Tots program, 10News reported.
According to the San Diego County District Attorney's Office, Virginia Kelly stole the toys and sold them for personal gain over several years.
Kelly, 73, was arrested on April 1 and charged with grand theft and embezzlement. She faces up to four years in prison if convicted.
According to the district attorney's office, Kelly was a foster mother and served as president of the Latino Foster Parents Association.
For several years, Kelly accepted donated toys during the holidays intended for the Toys For Tots program. She is suspected of selling the toys at garage sales instead of giving them to the program.
Authorities obtained search warrants and seized more than 11,000 toys from Kelly's home and two other locations, including a storage unit in Chula Vista.
Kelly cared for four foster children, and Child Welfare Services removed them from Kelly's home.
"Stealing from a charity and depriving needy children in San Diego of the chance to get a new toy is despicable," said District Attorney Bonnie Dumanis. "This criminal investigation has identified someone who brazenly took advantage of the community's goodwill and trust for many years."

There is a special place in Hell for people who steal from poor children.
In the meantime, I hope there is a special place in prison for same — I hope she likes her new wife Bertha.
Because people are gullible enough to believe that no one is as heartless and capable of stealing from a worthwhile charity. Still, 11,000 is a LOT.
