With 'Atlas Shrugged,' Hollywood may have its first anti-bailout movie

Hollywood could soon be going Objectivist.

After decades in development hell, Ayn Rand’s capitalism-minded “Atlas Shrugged” is taking new steps toward the big screen — with one of the film world’s most prominent money men potentially at its center.

Ryan Kavanaugh’s Relativity Media is circling the Baldwin Entertainment project and could come aboard to finance with Lionsgate, which got involved several years ago.

Rand’s popular but polarizing book — it’s derided by many literary critics but has a huge public following — tells the story of Dagny Taggart, a railroad executive trying to keep her corporation competitive in the face of what she perceives as a lack of innovation and individual responsibility.

A number of stars have expressed serious interest in playing the lead role of Taggart. Angelina Jolie previously had been reported as a candidate to play the strong female character, but the list is growing and now includes Charlize Theron, Julia Roberts and Anne Hathaway.

Although it was written a half-century ago, producers say that the book’s themes of individualism resonate in the era of Obama, government bailouts and stimulus packages -- making this the perfect moment to bring the 1,100-page novel to the big screen.

I’m sure that the film version will bear little resemblance to the novel.

Jolie is kind of an enigma, but the other three are all leftists.

I have my doubts, but I hope it’s as good as (Turner’s!!) TNT “Animal Farm”, even if unintentional...

I’d love to see Cate Blanchett play Dagny.

I think Angelina would have been good, b/c it’s supposedly one of her favorite books and I think she would have been passionate about the role.

But I’m a little burned out on her and she’s been dragging her feet on this movie for years.

Yeah, the way they made the "bad" guys the "big bad corporation" ... I couldn't believe that ... I walked out when I discovered the "rewrite".

Ah Jeez, not that commie actress. She’s one of the “Clooney acolytes”. I’ve heard her interviewed once and she’s the walking billboard for the left. Hope it will be Jolie.

I just finished the book on Monday. I would love to see this made into a movie and now really is the perfect time.

I just started reading this for the first time and was wondering why it had never been made into a movie. Thanks for the post!

Yeesh - I’m betting that in the Hollywood version the inhabitants of Galt’s Gulch are all arrested and sent to a labor camp...

I think we've played this game before on FR as to "who should play whom," but

Francisco D'Aconia has to be Antonio Banderas

Briefly, I wanted Arnold to be the Swedish guy, but I think Arnold is too old now.

Daniel Craig has to be Hank Reardon, although Hugh Jackman would work.

Don't like Theron as Dagney. Hate Julia Roberts as Dagney. She is absolutely the most important, and hardest, to cast. Jennifer Love Hewitt is too young. Kim Cattrall is too fluffy. Catherine Zeta Jones is not hard enough. Angelina is in fact believable in the role, but barely. Linda Hamliton of "Terminator 2" era would have been perfect, as would Sigourney Weaver of "Alien" era. But both are just too old now.
