The ‘America Is Arming Mexico’s Drug Gangs’ Lie

Posted By Dan Gifford On March 31, 2009 @ 1:41 pm In Media Criticism, Politics | 2 Comments

“There is an iron river of guns that flows South into Mexico [from the United States] to supply criminal organizations on the border,” says Tom Mangan, senior special agent with Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms (ATF) in Phoenix. “They are in the market for machine guns, hand grenades, rocket-propelled grenade launchers and Stinger anti-aircraft missiles,” he continues. That’s right. The drug gangs can’t buy that and other military stuff like the 40MM grenades (the silver things in the upper left) and the rifles with launchers shown in the photo below in Mexico, so they drive to the United States and purchase them from American gun dealers at retail. Isn’t that the story you’ve been told?  Well, congratulations. America’s First Amendment protected propaganda ministry has punked you on another important issue — this time on behalf of dissembling officials and gun confiscation advocates.

[1]

For the benefit of those who may not know, machine guns (not the same thing as the demonized “semi-automatic”), hand grenades, rocket-propelled grenade launchers, Stinger anti-aircraft missiles and other such military items are illegal to possess by US civilians, which means they are not for sale in gun stores. OK, in the interest of extreme accuracy for anyone in need, there are some civilian owned machine-guns in America, but they all have to have been registered with the ATF by 1986 as evidence that a special Treasury tax has been paid and the owner’s residence state has to approve the possession....>

Helps with our balance of trade numbers - they kept the dollar low to improve exports and are now complaining about it - heck at least we are exporting something.

Just my luck that they’re cracking down on the flow of weapons into Mexico!

I’d just packed up 3 cases of fragmentation grenades, 4 cases of AKs, and 4 brand-new RPT launchers with 100 rounds each and now have nowhere to sell them.

Just damn!!

Maybe I’m not reading the Krauthammer quote right. Is he a gun control advocate? It sure seemed like it from the quote.

“Never waste a good crisis.” - Obama Whitehouse team motto

They see a crisis in Mexico so they are trying to use it to ban guns. Simple as that.

" now have nowhere to sell them."

What's the price? I'm sure you can find some buyers... : )

Except we don't supply Mexico with guns, at least not the ones the really want or need and in the quantities they want.

This is the big lie that must be exposed and rebutted every time it is said or printed.

I would have to read the entire opinion piece to make sure but it seems he is saying that IF you want the seemingly genteel societies of the UK and Canada then you have to ban all firearms.

I don't think he believes the societies of the UK or Canada are "civilized" because they have disarmed their citizenry. Too many ellipses to be sure.

A caller into a local talk show said he believes that the reason gun and ammo sales are up is because Americans are sending them to Mexico. The host was not amused.

I told my husband a long time ago that there was no way any regular American was supplying the Mexicans with guns. I would imagine that if I went and bought 10 guns in one day I would be investigated.

I know a pawn shop owner/gun dealer who ordered 100 guns for his business and he got investigated. He didn’t get in trouble but you can bet they were still watching him.

I want to know the address of the Gun Shop that is selling the fully automatic rifles and rocket launchers to the Mexicans. I don’t have a shop like that around here. Has there ever been a report of the origin from where the automatic weapons the Mexicans use?

In my opinion, it seems Krauthammer was being sarcastic. He has long since complained about the idiocy of gun laws and other overbearing regulations. He often implies that such laws are “good” because it shuts people like Sarah Brady up for a while even if such laws do absolutely nothing about reducing crime, which is usually the case.

From the piece:

The answer to the second question is equally obvious. Gun running from the United States into Mexico has been going on since the 1800s. But the stuff bought or stolen here is not the military weaponry we are continually told is arming the gangs there. This paragraph from a Los Angeles Times story managed to get the story right even if nobody else in the media will report it:

Most of these [military] weapons are being smuggled from Central American countries or by sea, eluding U.S. and Mexican monitors who are focused on the smuggling of semi-automatic and conventional weapons purchased from dealers in the U.S. border states of Texas, New Mexico, Arizona and California. . . . The enhanced weaponry represents a wide sampling from the international arms bazaar, with grenades and launchers produced by U.S., South Korean, Israeli, Spanish or former Soviet bloc manufacturers. Many had been sold legally to governments, including Mexico’s, and then were diverted onto the black market. Some may be sold directly to the traffickers by corrupt elements of national armies, authorities and experts say … These groups appear to be taking advantage of a robust global black market and porous borders, especially between Mexico and Guatemala. Some of the weapons are left over from the wars that the United States helped fight in Central America, U.S. officials said.

Actually, this is true: The U.S. is supplying Mexican drug cartels with the weaponry they deploy against Mexican military and law enforcement sources.

Let me show you the ways:

(1) American Congress authorizes increased military aid to Mexican security forces;
(2) These monies are used to purchase automatic weaponry and anti-personnel devices;
(2a) These items are beyond the financial means of virtually all Americans, or are illegal to possess by American citizens;
(3) The weaponry is transferred to the Mexican government, usually accompanied by considerable press fanfare;
(4) Mexican government officials (civilian and military) sell this weaponry to the cartels for millions of dollars;
(4a) Mexican government officials grow fat and rich thanks to the American taxpayer;
(4b) The drug cartels grow powerful thanks to the American taxpayer (weapons), and rich thanks to American drug users (cash) who have no trouble securing whatever drugs they want.

This is why we need to pass a ban on (semi-automatic, scary-looking) assault weapons, to close the “gun show loophole”, and to increase funding of the “Drug War”.

Any questions?

P.S. Now that we have entered the Age of Obamius, with the attendant increase in cosmic feel-good vibes, it’s time we dropped the term “Drug War” to the more apt “Chemically-Sourced Contingency Operations”.
